Bigotry is not welcomed in this country. My thoughts are with everyone present at the Hindu temple in Aurora. I am grateful no one was harmed.

@DemWomenCaucus.bsky.social and I are appalled by DHS and ICE’s failure to provide care and account for miscarriages & pregnancy-related medical outcomes in detention centers. @Pettersen.house.gov, @RepBeatty.bsky.social, and I led a letter condemning their actions. They must be held accountable.

Happy Indigenous Peoples’ Day! I’d like to commemorate and honor the rich cultures and histories of Native American communities. Today is a perfect opportunity to celebrate, educate, and appreciate Indigenous Peoples across the United States.

Every year, more than one in five U.S. adults live with a mental illness. This World Mental Health Day, I remain committed to ensuring every American has access to quality mental healthcare. Let’s tear down the stigma: it’s okay not to be okay.

Illinois families are still recovering from the July and August storms. President Trump just turned his back on them. I will not stand for that. My Illinois colleagues and I will hold him accountable for denying much-needed aid to families across the state.

For LGBTQ+ History Month, I'm honoring Rick Garcia, an activist whose efforts helped pass Illinois’s first anti-gay discrimination law. He later co-founded Equality Illinois, an advocacy organization in Chicago. Garcia’s contributions to LGBTQ+ civil rights are still felt today. Rest in peace.

Community health centers and emergency feeding operations stepped up for our communities in the wake of Trump’s attacks on SNAP and Medicaid. My Food Access in Community Health Centers Act helps them do it together, ensuring patients get the care and food access they need.

While Americans are struggling to afford housing, gas, and groceries, Trump plans to host an “exclusive” dinner for the biggest buyers of the meme coin that earned him an estimated $635 million. At the expense of the American people, Trump repeatedly shows he can be bought.

The United States would not be what it is today without the contributions and sacrifices of the LGBTQ+ community. This LGBTQ+ History Month, I honor the progress they’ve made towards equal rights and stand with the community as they face attacks threatening to undo that work.

Literature has the power to change perspectives, teach lessons, and to share ideas. Nobody should be able to take that away from the public. This Banned Books Week, let’s remember that, in the face of attacks on truth and diversity, all Americans deserve the freedom to read.

“We the People,” the theme of NAACP’s Freedom Fund Gala last weekend, is more than a phrase. It’s how Black people got into spaces not meant for us: through organizing, activism, and community. We must keep doing so — not just for our sake, but for our democracy.

One of my proudest accomplishments was helping pass the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, which prevents convicted abusers from possessing firearms and closes the “Boyfriend Loophole.” This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, I continue to stand with survivors, as I always have.

Congress holds the power of the purse. Trump’s pocket rescission that cancels $810 million in federal funding is outright ILLEGAL. House Republicans must address the President’s continued undermining of the separation of powers, and he must be held accountable.

A year ago, ICE agents raided a South Shore apartment building, where they dragged U.S. citizens and immigrants alike out of bed in the middle of the night for political theater. A year later, many are still displaced and hurting. I continue to fight for accountability and justice for all.

Grief doesn’t end when the news cycles do; Chicago Survivors stays with families after gun violence. I was honored to join them at their gala with Po Murray of @newtownaction.org, who, like Chicago Survivors, knows the pain of gun violence and turned it into action.

A Chicago resident was injured after being mistaken for a fugitive by ICE. After Operation Midway Blitz, Trump’s administration continues to purposefully target cities like Chicago and terrorize our communities with reckless, untrained agents. Congress must hold the administration accountable.

Since the Big Ugly Law took effect, SNAP participation in Illinois has dropped 24%. That's thousands of families struggling to put food on the table so billionaires can get a tax break. This week, I talked with community leaders about what these cuts really mean.

Rural healthcare facilities should have the best available training and equipment to serve women and infants in maternity care deserts. The Rural Obstetrics Readiness Act tackles the growing maternal mortality crisis by ensuring patients can access the care they need closer to home.

Who you love does not impact your ability to serve. 15 years ago, the homophobic “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy was finally repealed. Despite this, President Trump and Secretary Hegseth continue to discriminate against transgender service members, and I will fight for their recognition.

Trump’s war on Iran & his reckless tariff policies have driven diesel prices sky-high, forcing Illinois farmers to drain their pockets during harvest season. The sooner the war ends & ALL of Congress holds Trump accountable, the faster we can act to support our farmers.

Trump’s EPA is putting our air and our environment at risk to please Big Polluters. Global warming is real; the science proves it, and this irresponsible administration is openly allowing greenhouse gas emissions to further contaminate our planet. This is DANGEROUS.

Today marks the 25th anniversary of one of our nation’s greatest tragedies. We honor the 2,977 lives lost that day, the thousands more who either became ill or died from the toxins at Ground Zero, and care for those who still carry the weight of their losses. Never forget.

@RepBarragan.bsky.social, @RepYvetteClarke.bsky.social, @RepEmilyRandall.bsky.social and I, along with 49 colleagues, are again demanding that Secretary Kennedy and CMS Administrator Oz immediately cease the sharing of all Medicaid data with ICE. It is a shame that we have to say this again.

This Labor Day, I’m thinking about the Pullman porters, who, in 1925, organized the first all-black union, the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters. Their fight helped build the labor movement and the Civil Rights Movement. I’ll keep protecting the right for workers to organize.

“Woke” is not evil. “Woke” will not ruin this country. This administration’s attacks on DEI policies and programs are an attempt to dismantle hard-earned progress towards civil rights and equal opportunity. I will not let this happen.

As we return from recess, my colleagues and I urge Speaker Johnson to bring the Restore Trust in Government Act to the floor immediately. Americans deserve a REAL stock trading ban for Washington politicians, not one that masquerades as a voter suppression bill.

62 years ago, the Food Stamp Act of 1964 made a promise: no one in this country should go hungry. Now the Trump administration’s efforts to eliminate SNAP are an effort to rob millions of Americans of their food security. I will not stay quiet while this happens.

As August ends, I want to emphasize the importance of supporting your local black-owned businesses. Illinois’s second congressional district is home to many black businesses, all of which are essential aspects of our local economy. Support one today!
