I cut this photo out of Time or Newsweek magazine's Gay issue in 1982, the year I came out. After 44 years, I still have the hard copy. Being out has always been about visibility to me. In 1982, walking arm in arm was kinda a big deal. Still is in many places. #LoveIsLove #NationalComingOutDay

A heron lifts up out of the water to take flight over a lake in a very great day. Sky and lake blend into one gray sheet while the water gives us a clear reflection of the bird as it takes off. A simple wooden dock stands to the right of the scene.

Good morning from my little buddies.

Two mushrooms stand side by side. One appears tall, but is really about 2 inches tall, and the other looks like a child next to it. The small mushroom has a firm stalk, but it’s round head seems misshapen, maybe eaten. These two together look a little like big brother and little brother, standing on a mossy hill.

Don’t know where this one came from or whether it is a honey bee, but it’s now a Western North Carolina busy bee. There was no reason to fear a sting while this little fella and all of its friends flew from flower to flower. #photography

A short mushroom seems to be hiding in the grass. It has a red, rusty red colored top and a stem that is reddish green. The stem has what looks like bite taken out of it pretty low to the ground. It makes me wonder what could be so short it could only reach that low part of the mushroom. Or maybe that's the tastiest spot. The mushroom is nestled in deep green skinny blades of grass.

We’ve had a good soaking and lots of humidity … apparently prime conditions for huge mushrooms. I believe this one is called a white fly agaric, a rare hallucinogenic mushroom found in the Appalachians. Quit licking your lips, buddy. #dogs #lovedogs #WNC #mushrooms

Geese ... large and in charge. A group of geese head across the road. They seemed to be ignoring the few cars that had to stop. Luckily, none of us ignored the geese.

Here's a hollow trunk I saw on a hike yesterday. It looked like a totem pole that was melting away. The reddish wood has rotted and was crumbling from within. Yet it still stood tall. It probably once was a thick trunk. #ThickTrunkTuesday
