Workers Drive Minneapolis, our ordinance establishing basic protections for workers and residents as autonomous vehicle companies prepare to enter our city, is headed to a final vote and this Thursday, we’re set to make history.

Be so for real. MPD is consistently wasting their funding on unnecessary resources and taxpayers are funding their settlements for illegal actions. But the Star Tribune chooses to publish a story on saving MPD’s horses that are not making our city safer.

Did you rent from any of these landlords between 2018-2025? In 2024, I led the City Council to ban rent price-fixing algorithms like RealPage that landlords use to illegally collude and drive up rents across the country. The DOJ and AG Ellison won a $360 million settlement on behalf of renters.

Keeping families in their homes is common sense. St. Paul’s temporary 60 day pre-eviction notice resulted in a 69% decrease in evictions compared to the June 2023-2025 average. Meanwhile, Minneapolis saw evictions rise 14% over the same time period after Frey vetoed our pre-eviction notice.
June saw a notable decline in eviction filings in St. Paul following implementation of the city’s temporary 60-day pre-eviction notice requirement. St. Paul recorded just 74 eviction filings in June, a 69.8% decrease compared to June 2025, while Ramsey County overall saw filings decline by 49.7%. It will take additional months of data to determine the long-term impact of the ordinance, but the initial decrease is significant.

In 2020, Mayor Frey blamed the MPD contract as an "nearly impenetrable barrier" to reining in a rogue dept. Yet during my time on City Council, two MPD contracts both failed to include any meaningful reforms while massively increasing MPD's budget.
MPD Contract Negotiations:

1-Reining in off-duty Side Gigs
2-Eliminate “Coaching”
3-Banning Field Training Officers with sustained misconduct records
4-Eliminate the 70/30 Rule
5-Permanent inclusion of Detective Rank

*Putting a MPD gun range just 400 feet from Windom Elementary School should be a non-starter. *Buying property at twice the assessed value should raise serious questions about how the $6 million purchase price was settled on and if proper due diligence was done in negotiations with the seller.
Map shows 400 feet from the proposed Cop City with a gun range to the Windom Elementary School. This is a residential neighborhood. Frey's wasteful spending. The proposed site for MPD’s “Cop City” in Ward 11:

2027 assessed value is $2,630,900

Frey's proposed purchase price is $6,000,000.

Purchasing land at millions above the assessed value raises serious questions about Frey’s use of taxpayer resources.

Let's clear up the facts: *Claiming the consent decree requires a new $40 million building is false. MPD can meet training needs with existing renovations & shared facilities. *Meditation rooms & massage therapy for MPD are wants, not needs & should be weighed against other uses for $40 million.
Myth: The consent decree requires MPD get a “Cop City”

Fact: MPD’s “Cop City” isn’t mandated by the consent decree. The MN Dept of Human Rights consent decree outlined how the City could meet MPD training needs with existing facilities and sharing spaces with partner agencies. The Frey administration has conceded their “Cop City” is not a legal requirement of the consent decree.Myth: The proposed MPD “Cop City” addresses pressing needs.

Fact: MPD’s “Cop City” replicates existing facilities and goes beyond any realistic needs, including:

Another gun range (in addition to the 4th Precinct gun range and leased space from the UMN Police Dept)
Virtual reality simulators
Meditation rooms and massage therapy

For the third time, Mayor Frey is bringing up his Cop City proposal again on Tuesday May 19th at 1:30pm. Minneapolis residents have made it loud and clear that this is a waste of $40 million. In the aftermath of ICE's occupation, we have far more pressing priorities for our communities.
Graph compares $3 million for rent assistance post ICE occupation to $140 million for MPD buildings and questions the priorities for Mayor Frey.
