If I asked you ‘what do 2 and 7 have in common?’ and you reply that they're both numbers, then either a) you think that's an interesting answer, or b) you're happy to waste my time with a boring answer. In neither case does that reflect well on you.

Obviously people will be arguing about it for ever, but there's at least a defensible case to be made that OpenAI's new model qualifies as AGI. I'm kind of surprised to see people mostly just chatting about other things. I would have thought it's at least the most interesting thing to happen today.

So I've been notified that my role is at risk. Would anybody like to hire a me. I've spent the last 7 years as chief architect, which realistically meant doing every job from infrastructure to product and occasionally acting CTO. I am interested in everything, and curious to try new things.

I just cannot resist this sort of clickbait. Of course I don't want to be wrong about rainbows, and the only way to find out if I *am* wrong is to watch the video.

A few days ago Lawrence Hollom posted a preprint that solves a problem about posets, informally known as the fishbone conjecture, which I am told was extremely central in the area. 🧵 arxiv.org/abs/2411.16844

A resolution of the Aharoni-Korman conjecture
A poset $P$ is said to satisfy the finite antichain condition, or FAC for short, if it has no infinite antichain. It was conjectured by Aharoni and Korman in 1992 that any FAC poset $P$ possesses a ch...

My main opinion of bsky so far is that you guys (by which I mean the strangers who show up on the Discover feed, not my actual friends) really need to chill out with the self-congratulation a bit

There's a piece in yesterday's FT saying that Bluesky feels ‘like a Stoke Newington drinks party’. (I think that's not supposed to be entirely a good thing, especially since presumably there aren't any drinks here.) But in my corner it just still feels empty. Where are you all?

I'm watching some folks reverse engineer the xz backdoor, sharing some *preliminary* analysis with permission. The hooked RSA_public_decrypt verifies a signature on the server's host key by a fixed Ed448 key, and then passes a payload to system(). It's RCE, not auth bypass, and gated/unreplayable.

Why are the bsky devs being so slow to let new users in? It's incredibly dangerous. We're going to end up like Mastodon, where a small group of early users act like we own the place and make newcomers feel unwelcome.

I’m going to try an experiment. The free-wheeling positive vibes on this site are so inspiring, I thought I’d try posting an inconclusive thread on something (mathematical) I’m thinking about. Even if no one sees it or cares, I hope the feeling of being watched might help me clarify my ideas.

I'm curious about the prospects for the value of literacy being diminished by technological progress. For example, the rise of video over text as a medium of instruction diminishes the usefulness of literacy for learning.

If you QT someone and then they block you, it just shows the QT text with no indication it was ever a comment on someone else's skeet. This could lead to misunderstandings.
