Yes, there’s a definite overlap into many areas where people talk with certainty after the event, yet are unable to see any such reasons beforehand.

This is the first in a series of posts about luck, a topic I've spent an enormous amount of time thinking (possibly obsessing) about, particularly over the last 3 years. If you read any of my work, do read this because I think it's the most important topic I've covered.

The golden era of the World Cup was 1966-1998 in terms of historical significance. Beyond that there was so much other football that it declined in relative importance IMO.

Rob Fielder @robfielder.bsky.social · 16/07/2026
My answer would be a hard no on this tournament. I think it’s been good but there’s just been too much football for much of it to be hugely memorable. I would be surprised if it gets remembered like some others.

Rob Fielder @robfielder.bsky.social · 19/06/2026
Yep, it’s a sort of blended relative measure. Relative to peers, historical comparisons and also other positions.
000
Rob Fielder @robfielder.bsky.social · 19/06/2026
Ultimately it’s entirely subjective. To me it’s roughly the top 25 players in the world spread across positions but I think there are spells when there may not be a world class right-back for instance.

Yes, very good. At the risk of sounding overly pompous I think the question about defending is thrown because of the areas of the pitch where the teams defended and how they went about it (as Michael’s piece speaks to).
