I know how people on here feel about Klobuchar, but I have a hunch she's going to surprise a lot of Dems and progressives with how aggressive (in a good way) she's going to be when she's governor.

But obviously that was my second choice behind the best submission of the batch.
A flag that says, "Minnesota," that looks like it was made with MS Paint. It includes a fish, look, hockey player, and other random Minnesota things.

The flag is unpopular among many people for very dumb reasons. But aesthetically, it is pretty basic. I would have preferred going with an expand d version of the center area of the seal. That loom is bad ass.
The seal of Minnesota, with a loon, some wheat, a couple trees, and the North Star.

Why does everyone assume that if Klobuchar is elected governor that she'd choose her replacement? I'd assume if she wins, she would resign so she can focus on the transition and Walz would choose the replacement, right? Or did I miss something?

This is aggravating. I submitted a request for a new plan over a year ago, and it's still "under review."

If you are a lawyer barred in Minnesota, I will personally sponsor your admission to the District Minnesota (you need one other person as well) and teach you how to do habeas cases. It's going to be all hands on deck.

6 cont.) Staff were not trained well or paid well, and it showed. Lots of fights, drugs, etc. The only positive that I ever heard was they had a longer visiting period and provided access to vending machines during visits, but I highly doubt that would continue under the current regime.

6) As w/ other private prisons, it doesn't have a great track record for safety and health. At least when it was a prison housing MN DOC people, there was a qualitative difference between the prison experiences in a DOC facility and in CoreCivic's Appleton.

5 cont.) That only lasted for a handful of years as the national incarceration population continued to drop. It's been sitting empty since 2010.

Robert Stewart @robertstewart.io · 04/08/2026
5) FYI, the Appleton prison has a history of this out-of-state incarceration practice. MN DOC started winding down its use of Appleton in the mid-2000s. To make up for the losses, CoreCivic contracted with states like Montana, Arizona, and Hawaii(!) to house their overflow.

4) The Minn Dist Ct is still dealing with the aftermath of Op Metro Surge, which means the ordinary business of the federal courts in MN have been and will continue to be heavily disrupted. Talk about making a preventable problem worse.

Federal immigration litigation from Operation Metro Surge is clogging Minnesota's federal court docket, forcing businesses to seek alternatives to resolve disputes.

3 cont.) These are attorneys who are very familiar with the tactics and bad faith of current federal prosecutors. It'll be interesting to see what the release orders look like.

Robert Stewart @robertstewart.io · 04/08/2026
3) (Not a lawyer, but) I believe this means habeas petitions would be heard in Minn Dist Ct. To say fed judges in MN have been soured on DOJ/DHS would be an understatement. Not only that, there are dozens of local attorneys who've had a crash course in imm law contra this specific DOJ/DHS admin.

2) Appleton is and always has been logistically impractical. It's 3 hrs from the nearest major airport (MSP) by county highways. The only way to get there is by car. No idea how people who may be released would get to the TC from there (considering what we've heard about detention ctrs in TX).

Robert Stewart @robertstewart.io · 04/08/2026
This sure is a...choice, for several reasons. 1) It was built by the city of Appleton at the height of the early 90s prison boom as a economic booster. It was sold to CoreCivic in 1997. It was not built for its practicality; it was built to be provide jobs for the very small, rural town.

My uni has transitioned to a new IRB system, and I love that instead of automating the process to move current IRBs from the old system to the new system, I got to spend my morning moving each current IRB manually, question by question.

With respect, and this is NOT a defense of Trump (who I loathe), I know people who did decades of prison time for felonies and who now SAVE LIVES in their communities Trump is unrepentant, a bad person, and should not be President, but it has NOTHING to do with having felony convictions

The point, though, is that neither primaries nor internal party selection processes are perfect. What may look attractive now because of current events will inevitably be less so when the shoe is on the other foot.

The convention ultimately ended in no endorsement, which was also an advantage for the incumbent because the district include a large proportion of college students who wouldn't be there in August for the primary. However, IO still won the primary by 12 points (then two years later ran Congress).

*sorry--6 hours, not 12 Despite Ilhan nearly reaching the 60% threshold on the **first ballot**, the incumbent's longtime party insider operatives coordinated with a second challenger to obstruct, delay, and prolong the process to try to wear down Ilhan's supporters.

A lot of talk about how great party selection processes are over primaries. Meanwhile, I'm just sitting here thinking about the 12 hours I spent sitting in a MN district convention when @ilhanmn.bsky.social first ran for office challenging a 40+ year incumbent.

Oof I do not like Criminology's new review system for reviewers. Someone thought, "Hey, you know those LORs where you have to write the letter but also answer a bunch of arbitrary ranking drop downs? What if we incorporated that into peer review??" This has to be Wiley's doing, right?
