I saw this yesterday, and I chuckled at first. This is embarrassing and demoralizing. (Also, I'd hate for people to take away from this article that Pangram is the way to go. No more love for Pangram than for any other form of Gen AI).

It's remarkable how many journalists don't know what an executive order is. English is not the official language of the US govt any more than it was a week ago. An EO is no more than the President's directive to exec branch officials about what *his* policies and what he directs them to **do**.

Trump’s new exec order making English the only official language of the US—for the first time in its history—is lost in the barrage of other news. Its premise is a lie: the US constitution’s ratification depended on the doc’s translation into German and Dutch

But I can see this EO being used to deny language services in all kinds of critical settings—health, voting, legal proceedings, etc. Even before yesterday, federal websites were already lagging in multilingual offerings. And I expect an uptick in incidents of language harassment in public spaces.

It does, however, weaken protections for civil rights. And together with the suspension of State Dept-funded critical language programs (Title VIII) and Fulbright / IIE funding freezes, not a great week for languages either.

The executive order making English the official language is out. Putting aside the dubious legality of establishing an official language by fiat, the only thing of substance is revoking Clinton’s EO 13166 mandating language services in federal services.
