Building a Caisson for Mulberry Harbour, 1944 Chalk and wash on paper | ART LD 4333

Massive, concrete 'Phoenix' caissons were built to be initially sunk and refloated once in position. In Normandy, they provided the shield that made it possible to unload troops and supplies.

Muirhead Bone was the first official war artist, depicting the ruined Western Front landscapes of the First World War. He was an artist member of the War Artists' Advisory Committee.

My #ThingThursday is a cap badge for possibly my favourite tank regiment in the Burma Campaign - 3 Carabiniers. They fight in the Battle of Imphal like a fire service being deployed to threatened sectors across the perimeter of the plain, including up in the mountains around the Silchar Track...

Designed in New Zealand by Tpr. W. J. Robertson at the AFV School, WW2. This unditching gear required a small pit dug behing a stuck AFV and a hooked shackle attached to the track. Reversing the vehicle pulled itself back out. (Composited image) 1/2

Last week at the Ring of Brodgar I matched the famous photo of Bren Carriers of the 9th Gordons from 18 June 1941. Taken by Lt Taylor, 'in collaboration with Major Eric Linklater', I suspect it was a one-off staged for the photo op. www.iwm.org.uk/collections/...
