Extended engagement processes & balkanized decisionmaking have led to the US suffering from declining infrastructure investment. In new work at @urbaninstitute.bsky.social, I argue that we also need to consider a 3rd issue: The informal role of local elected officials in influencing outcomes.

I'm thinking a lot about how to prepare for January 20th and beyond, on every front. Here in Maryland, CASA has set up a hotline 1-888-214-6016 to report any ICE encounters. Take care of yourself and your community.

Cheonggyecheon is proof that removing highways can make cities better. 20 years ago, Seoul replaced concrete with a stream, and the results are remarkable: cooler temperatures, cleaner air, and 12 million visitors annually. My latest for the Guardian: www.theguardian.com/world/2025/j...

Young Americans may not *want* to own a car, but most will have to drive b/c cars are usually the only option when you have a job and kids. This is what happens when a country has decades of car-centric development. It's the very opposite of freedom.

The last time Democrats passed a law to actually REDUCE HEALTHCARE COSTS AT THE SOURCE they were kicked out of power by the voters. It's called the Inflation Reduction Act and it allows Medicare to negotiate prescription drug prices...something progressives had been demanding for decades.
