Roberto Buccione @robbuc.bsky.social · 05/10/2026It's sweet that you would think that this might be surprising. Outside of the science evaluation reform bubble, this (& other similar metrics) is exactly the kind of total nonsense that is still systematically and broadly used to evaluate research, people & institutions. 020
Roberto Buccione @robbuc.bsky.social · 16/09/2026Indeed, and if I remember correctly, they also unhesitatingly self-imposed catalytic converters, reduced emissions and other such things. 010
Roberto Buccione @robbuc.bsky.social · 01/09/2026disinteressato (Italian) can have dual meaning. from the Cambridge Dictionary: The Italian word disinteressato translates to uninterested when meaning "not interested," or disinterested, selfless, and unselfish when meaning "impartial" or acting without personal gain 010
Roberto Buccione @robbuc.bsky.social · 01/09/2026😆 But is this for real? I definitely did not write it in Italian... 100
Roberto Buccione @robbuc.bsky.social · 01/09/2026I don't mean to be pedantic, and won't take you literally... However, a non-native English speaker—who, I wager, likely knows a second language better than most native English speakers do—might erroneously use 'irregardless' or 'disinterested' simply because of similarities with their native tongue. 220

Roberto Buccione @robbuc.bsky.social · 21/08/2026Regardless, it's not like not calling him an academic is going to protect the category. We all know a few racist, sexist & generally hateful professors who are bona fide "academics". Whether we like it or not. 011
Roberto Buccione @robbuc.bsky.social · 21/08/2026OK, I do understand where this is coming from but is that really the issue here? And in any case, who/what, exactly, is an "academic"? Isn't it a person who teaches & does research at a Uni? Or maybe only full professors? Or better still, only the people we like? 100
Roberto Buccione @robbuc.bsky.social · 19/08/2026Now, now, let's not get hung up on the minor details... 010
Roberto Buccione @robbuc.bsky.social · 10/07/2026I remember once a few years ago that he had posted a comment on Twitter (when it was civil) that I commented upon simply by saying (in nicer words) that it was dangerously close to supporting a toxic lab environment. He simply blocked me. Oh well. 010
Roberto Buccione @robbuc.bsky.social · 03/07/2026Indeed. And that's why there is no really simple solution, whether you are an aficionado of classic metrics or pushing for a more equitable, fair, respectful methodology for assessment. 000
Roberto Buccione @robbuc.bsky.social · 02/07/2026Interesting. Just one quibble on what "Scientific Impact" defines. I would argue that it's not measured in "Citations, visibility....". That's the very thinking we should change. Rather, isn't SI the demonstrable influence and benefit that scientists' work has on a specific field/discipline? 100

Roberto Buccione @robbuc.bsky.social · 19/06/2026We know that the JIF was never intended as a "quality" indicator for specific articles. And BTW, if it has morphed into that aberration it's mostly the responsibility of the scientific community itself. Hence, is arguing that it's unsuited to measure the impact of a specific article something new? 000
Roberto Buccione @robbuc.bsky.social · 17/06/2026This accountability is refreshing; high-profile cases cases come to mind that end with a PhD student or postdoc taking the fall while the senior author gets off scot-free. www.nature.com/articles/d41...nature.com‘Student Geng’ ignites research-integrity scandal in China after calling out senior academicsVideo blogger’s viral accusations of data manipulation in Nature journals have sparked intense debate and speedy institutional investigations. 021
Roberto Buccione @robbuc.bsky.social · 17/06/2026Beyond the high profile of the affected journals and their unusually rapid response—as noted by @elisabethbik.bsky.social—the most notable aspect of this story is that the home institutions appear to have taken strong disciplinary action against the supervisors and PIs, not just the first authors. 143

Roberto Buccione @robbuc.bsky.social · 05/09/2025I wouldn't discount a certain level of bias but based on what you report it is just a correlation.
