I bought a cocktail shaker ten years ago along with a corkscrew. I have not used either in that time frame. I know as soon as I get rid of them I will have a need for them. I also don't drink alcohol. These take up space with old power cords I collect that I'll have a need for someday.

On immigration as American IT people
“For the CS majors, SWE is -not it- for immigration. Nor is Analytics. The market is way too competitive. Too many young and hungry people already constantly immigrating with CS degrees.

Specialize. Do it smartly.

Legacy. COBOL. ICS. The niches that aren’t sexy that half the planet runs on and the people who installed and maintained them are retiring or dead. Get good at being a computer janitor keeping SCADA and mainframes running. Banking. Hospital tech.

Same with cybersecurity. Entry level analyst market is saturated. Specialize! Cloud certs to fix all the poorly implemented buckets. Dull international GRC. Security engineering for obnoxious and finicky products like legacy SIEMs and forensic suites. Get certs in those, not just Sec+ or CISSP. The sexy jobs got pitched and sold by too many opportunist universities. Be an IT janitor and be damn good at it.”

At my sams club I can get 20 fajita flour tortillas, 5 lbs of chicken thighs, 25 lb bag of rice and a two pound block of cheddar for $39.25. I haven't been able bring myself to order take out food for a long time because of that. I use a rice cooker and a croc pot so very little active cooking.

Handy food tip. I buy a carver ham or a spiral cut ham, as per lb it is cheaper than deli meat, then I cut it up and wrap enough for a couple sandwiches in parchemnt paper and freeze it so when I go to unthaw some I'm not worried about getting too much out and wasting any of it.
