Well, I'm sure Eunice Foote would like a word. Also, this newspaper clipping from 1912.

I finally got my new watch from @repebble.com! It's the watch I've been waiting 14 years for! And, seriously, it's probably the first gadget in that time I've actually been excited for, and in the hand it's exactly what I hoped it would be. Everyone involved: well done, you delivered.

HTC TyTN II for me. Back when smartphones were still trying their best to be mini laptops.
A picture of a HTC TyTN II, a smartphone released twenty years ago that includes a slide-out keyboard and tilting screen so it takes on a form similar to a laptop.

The Irish know their breakfasts. I had no reason to doubt before, but now I have proof.
A traditional Irish breakfast. Two sausages, bacon, white pudding, black pudding, fried mushrooms, a fried egg, a grilled tomato and a hash brown on a plate with a ramekin of baked beans. On a separate plate, slices of buttered toast.

I saw this up in Manchester, right next to a busy tram stop in the city centre. Bravo to whoever is responsible.
A large poster on the side of a building. It depicts Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, one of the richest people in the world, with the large caption: "If you can send Katy Perry into space you can pay more tax. Amazon avoided £433 million in UK tax in 2023. Just tax billionaires."

Have you ever read the copypasta about "respect" vs. "respect"? It really does sum him up well.
Sometimes people use “respect” to mean “treating someone like a person” and sometimes they use “respect” to mean “treating someone like an authority”.

And sometimes people who are used to being treated like an authority say “if you won’t respect me I won’t respect you” and they mean “if you won’t treat me like an authority I won’t treat you like a person”.

And they think they’re being fair but they aren’t, and it’s not okay.

Not my normal kind of post, but I was on a walk today and while commenting on how clear the view was we noticed an interesting-looking splotch in the distance. Turns out it was the Lovell Telescope at Jodrell Bank, 60km away to the South.

I'm a few days late, but I compained. My letter, if anyone wants to steal it. It's a nice round 2000 characters:
The BBC's news output across live channels (e.g. BBC News Channel), discussion programmes (e.g. Newsnight) and published articles (e.g. BBC News Online) has a demonstrable and blatant bias towards coverage of a minority extremist political group, Reform. Independent studies have demonstrated their their spokesman, Nigel Farage, has received more hours/lines of coverage on the BBC than any other individual in British politics in recent months. Even when Farage and Reform are not involved in stories, the BBC actively seeks out their opinions or makes comparisons to them, creating the impression that Reform and Farage are a touchstone against which other political stances can – and, indeed, absolutely must – be compared. Equally, stories that should reflect poorly on Farage and Reform tend to avoid making the association, the BBC shrugging off it’s responsibility of holding them accountable for the many consequences of their actions.

Recently, the BBC broadcast a ninety minute speech by Farage which independent fact-checkers have demonstrated to be almost exclusively lies, that senior police officials have branded as 'dangerous', and human rights advocates have called 'terrifying', but this live coverage was provided unfiltered and unchallenged on the BBC's flagship news channel. Meanwhile, similar speeches given by the leaders of the Scottish National Party, Liberal Democrats, Paid Cymru, the Conservatives, Your Party and, indeed, by the Prime Minister himself have not even received a mention.

The bias is blatant, yet rather than counter or even try to deny it, senior BBC staff have openly and gleefully confirmed that Reform, Farage and their allies receive disproportionately large coverage and have their words go unchallenged due to their presence in the public conversation, disingenuously and dangerously ignoring that the BBC - arguably more than any other organisation - guides that conversation. It is well past time the BBC acted like the PSB it is meant to be.

I made this godforsaked picture and by god I'm going to use it.
An edited version of the "Myth of Consensual Sex" meme. In the original, a man and woman both say "I consent" while a depiction of Jesus, off to the side, says, "I don't!". Beneath the caption says "Isn't there somebody you forgot to ask?" In this case, the man and woman have been labelled with the UK and EU flags, and Jesus' face has been replaced by Rupert Murdoch's.

I didn't see it, but we were treated to an amazing illuminated new moon the next night here.

I don't know for sure that these special Unicode character sets were designed specifically for the purpose of imitating old-timey playbills but they certainly channel that certain utter clusterfuck rich-kid-in-a-sweetshop method of typeface selection that seemed to prevail at the time.
An early 1900s playbill advertising either one or fifteen events (it's not clear) using an utterly mindfucking variety of typefaces and sizes ranging from "so small it can only be read by ants" to "so big it can only be read from space".

I'm at the Anne Frank museum in Amsterdam. Chilling, but it's wonderful to think that such an atrocious thing could never happen again. Yes siree, no possibility of the worst of humanity being repeated in the 2020s, just as the 1940s fades from living memory. Just not possible. At all. Nope. Never.

I've never had an LNER breakfast, but I'm in Poland at the moment and let me tell you: PKP knows breakfast.
A tabletop on board a train. On the table is a breakfast meal including a plate of Polish sausages, fried runny eggs, crispy bacon, fresh salad, garnish and a dollop each of ketchup and mustard. There is also a large cup of coffee and a basket of fresh bread and butter.

Same. I spent some time in Vienna last year and was also impressed by how livable the place is. I spent a lot of time chatting to locals in a coffee shop on Helmut-Zill-Park in Favoriten and they were aware - and very proud - of the quality of public infrastructure.

The battle to keep Christmas alive for the youngest member of my family has taken an extreme twist, thanks to yours truly. "How did Santa know to deliver my gifts to your house, Uncle RMUK?" "Dunno, kid, but it looks like the fat bastard dropped some paperwork that might explain a few things..."

[Two people hang out with some beverages. Cueball here has a bright green crazy straw.]
Cueball: The thing to understand about the plastic crazy straw design world is that there are two main camps: The professionals - designing for established brands - and the hobbyists. The hobbyist mailing lists are full of drama, with friction between the regulars and a splinter group focused on loops...
