Freshwater scientist in California. Undecided about how much science content I’ll post here. For now mostly art and pretty things.

Every river in North America, every day for two years. The combined flow to the sea sinks as low as 53,000 m³/s in winter and swells past 290,000 by late June, more than quadrupling each spring. Data: GloFAS, @copernicusecmwf.bsky.social #rivers #dataviz #hydrology

For months, I’ve been raising the alarm about the loss of staff at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and how it is imperiling their work protecting our wildlife and public lands. In December, 25% of the agency was gone. Now, it’s nearly 40%. But FWS still refuses to address the staffing crisis.

This is much less of a win than the headline suggests. Bullying and harassment is still punishable and misuse of pronouns can be a form of harassment.

My guess is that the article was largely written and edited by AI.

Even if you don’t use AI, don’t make demands of the authors if you aren’t going to bother explaining why more information is needed.

Don’t do this. It’s a disservice to your community. If you are going to use AI, use AI responsibly.

A comment to add “metadata” and “full statistical results” to a supplement without any indication about what information was missing.

There were lots of “suggestions” (phrased as orders) that were requests for additional analyses but with zero context or justification. Things we could do but without any explanation why we’d need to.

I think it’s going to depend on the journal. You can try citing the post with an accessed date. But keep in mind that you are citing a particularly ephemeral part of the internet.

And... that's all, folks. San Francisco State University is shutting down its Estuary and Ocean Science Center, the only marine lab on the shores of San Francisco Bay.
screenshot of an email that starts with:

"Dear Friends of the Estuary & Ocean Science Center,

I’m very sad to say that SFSU has started the process of shutting down the Estuary & Ocean Science Center / Romberg Tiburon Campus. The doors will be closed by the end of September. As you know, SFSU has been saying for years that they can no longer afford to operate the RT campus, with continued declines in enrollment at the university. The 53-acre site, with all its deferred maintenance, was required to become fully self-supporting. Unfortunately, maintenance and operation funds have been very difficult to find, even as grant funding has grown for our projects, programs, and student training."
