Next week, Google is set to launch an experimental satellite to test the feasibility of data centers in space and it's doing it on a SpaceX rocket. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/24/t...

The work was part of an ambitious effort from Google called Project Suncatcher, which aims to put artificial intelligence data centers into space and to harness the sun’s energy to power them. On Oct. 1, the satellite from the San Francisco lab — which Google has named MVP — is set to become the first step toward that goal by a major tech company. It will be loaded onto a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket at the Vandenberg Space Force Base near Santa Barbara, Calif., and then launched into orbit.

Google provided The New York Times with the first inside look at the project, which seemed like a science-fiction dream just a year ago.

I've always been annoyed by this framing — this time in @status.news — of news simply "emerging" or Thiel willingly telling everyone that he funded the Gawker suit (as they link to in this piece.) The news "emerged" because we broke it at Forbes. And then Thiel had to admit to it.

SpaceX said these shares are "performance-based," which may lead some to think Musk doesn't have access to them until the co hits those lofty goals. But Musk can vote them. He can take out loans against them w/ permission from the board (which he controls!) And he doesn't pay taxes on them yet.

He owns more than 50 percent of the company’s shares outstanding and controls more than 85 percent of the shareholder votes because of a class of super-voting shares, according to the filing. Gwynne Shotwell, SpaceX’s president and chief operating officer, was the only other executive listed in the filing to hold a seven-figure chunk of the super-voting shares.

Based on SpaceX’s current $1.25 trillion valuation, Mr. Musk’s ownership stake is worth more than $635 billion.

This was retweeted by Musk and in some ways says the quiet part out loud. Musk has long tried to give his Twitter acqusition purpose by saying it was for "free speech." But here we have an investor in that deal saying it was a move to remove regulatory and political "bottlenecks."
