Once again, I appreciate how you do this with totally normal, as-good-as-they-ever look photos, not with particularly bad ones.

Maybe? A case could be made for moving outside of the rock genre and including hip-hop. (See the famous 9/24/91 releases.)

It’s a weird Texas way of saying, basically, “the plaintiff lost entirely” or “case was dismissed”: the case was poured out by the trial court. (As far as I can tell.)

I think maybe we stop asking people if they think the economy is doing well. Ask them about how happy they are in a bunch of other ways, then address those.

Richard Heppner 🤷🏼‍♂️ @rlheppner.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Yeah. That’s the big question, of course. I think you look for other indicators (both qualitative and quantitative) to which people may be responding. I don’t know what those are (fractured media landscape? income inequality? climate anxiety?).

Also agreed!

Richard Heppner 🤷🏼‍♂️ @rlheppner.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
I agree with that. I think I'm making a different argument. I don't, and we shouldn't, care so much about whether people are correct about objective economic conditions. When people say the economy is bad, they are saying they are subjectively worried/unhappy, and that's what we should care about.

This is something that a lot of pundits and economists (but not a lot of politicians) tend to forget: The purpose of the economy is to encourage human flourishing. If some economic indicators are increasing while human happiness is decreasing, then those indicators don't mean what you think they do.

When they get back in power, Democrats need to go all-in on higher education. We need a campaign of reinvestment in public universities across the country that makes the Morrill Land-Grant Act look like nothing by comparison *and* a GI Bill of Rights-style program of tuition grants.

In a world where a sizable number of my students in a U.S. law school have never seen The Simpsons, we should really just retire the idea of a monoculture.

It’s also really not true. There’s some really basic rules about vampires, and eventually an overarching mythos. But mostly it was like “whatever the writers come up with they can make it work.”

Yes, I am just publicly demanding that someone make a joke-making machine for us. But, in true BlueSky fashion, I’m also going to act like it’s a matter of principle that I won’t go do it myself using AI.

Sep 24th 1975 - After being allowed back on the air for a final farewell, Howard Beale launches into a rant about life being "bullshit", causing the ratings to spike. 📽️📅 Network (1976)
3 Screenshots from the movie "Network" (1976): First, a newsroom control room filled with men at monitors and staff watching intently as a broadcast goes live, with the subtitle reading “Good evening. Today is Wednesday, September the 24th…”. Second, an older news anchor in a suit sits at a desk under studio lights, leaning forward with a grave expression as the subtitle reads “…and this is my last broadcast.” Third, a man in a suit speaks urgently into a phone in the control room as people move in the background, with the subtitle reading “He’s saying that life is bullshit and it is. What are you screaming about?”.

ICE's new policy is unprecedented. People who have detained for months are suddenly disappearing from the locator system — even if they haven't been moved. And people newly arrested are not showing up at all, their location now hidden from view. This will severely interfere with legal access.

I do miss having easy examples/references for class/jokes. But even more, I miss having a shared culture for us to draw from. We’re still dealing with the fragmentation of culture that started (in my life) with otherwise great things like obliterating the canon, and the rise of the Internet.
