(which is to say the theme of family and personal connections in the game is really the strong point of the game and gives its narrative staying power, much much more so than the half baked political commentary that's set dressing and not a real theme of the game. but no one else agrees with me)

It's like the story telling through the games mechanics are just ignored by most people. even though the actions you take throughout a game are the easiest way to communicate something about the characters you control and the world they're in without needing any text.

probably not 1:1 but this makes me think about when i would discuss the (what seemed to me) obvious themes of family and the characterization of bioshock's protagonist only to get push back from gamers that because he didn't have consistent speaking parts. so he wasn't a real character in the story.

Ken levine has done interviews where he says he has no bones to pick with ayn rand and libertarianism. Which i think paints a good picture for how we got something like infinite--esp since a lot of bs1 talent that kept the game together werent there for infinite.

it's incredibly funny how many of ken levine's games go into development hell. almost like he's a bad director or something. it's incredibly telling that both the original bioshock and infinite had troubled developments. the fact the art director quit infinite mid production really says it all.

honestly the gameplay doesn't get complained about enough. it was such a slog, they removed every mechanic from the first two games and didn't even replace them with new mechanics. the upgrade system was abysmal, AND pointless because you couldn't control what guns you were gonna use anyways.
