Just released the Material base I use on Vesper to get nice, chunky anti-aliased pixels with meaningful shimmer reduction. Check it out! riversalmon.itch.io/retro-surfac... *example image uses Makkon Textures, not included. #unrealengine #retro #gamedev
Floor corner demonstration of Retro Surface. A Makkon floor and wall texture are used, and the camera is at a grazing angle to demonstrate that shimmer is mitigated and anisotropic filtering still works, which it typically would not with point filtering. The scene is with dark teal lighting, and dark carved stone and tile surfaces.

another shot of the Retro Surface material I'm making to make using nice crunchy pixel textures look right in #unrealengine
An outdoor air conditioning unit rendered using Unreal 5 and the Retro Surface material. Point filtered details are preserved without Moire patterns forming in the distance.

Using some UV tricks from Inigo Quilez's blog, I was able to get very convincing pixel textures but still using regular samplers - meaning you get to use shared samplers, anisotropic filtering, etc! I also have some PBR inference from color textures worked in too. Textures by Makkon.

this is pretty close
A calvin and hobbs comic in which calvin is asked if he plays house, at which point the house becomes this large sprawling nightmare. Doctor House appears and says 'hi, i'm house. you have lupus btw'. Calvin runs down the scares terrified, with a crudely edited speech bubble saying "holy shit, it's house md!". the final frame is an overhead view of the house with a speech bubble that says "holy shit I love that show"

Using tricks with UVs that has apparently existed for a long time, was finally able to get a point filtered look with anisotropic filtering. All this really is under the hood is 'pixelating' the uvs with the shader while still using all the other ordinary texture sampler stuff #unreal #retro #ue5
Unreal editor screenshot of pixelated textures at a grazing angle that doesn't turn into a shimmery mess at distance. The normal maps are also pixelated. The textures themselves are dark stone bricks.

Another screenie of Vesper, a character modeled by @themistercat.bsky.social
A woman with round eyeglasses and green hair looks intently past the lower left third of the image. The image is a screenshot from an Unreal Engine project, using retro aesthetics (primarily low poly counts and point filtered textures)

Using a trick where I blend between point filtering and bilinear aniso over distance and grazing angle to avoid moire patterns #unreal #retrofps #gamedev
The entrance to the lower area of e1m4 in Vesper. A cliff face is shown with point filtering up close but blends into anisotropic bilinear filtering over distance and grazing angle.
