Do the Kazakh-China crossings have anywhere near the capacity for bulk goods like grain? 6600 TEU/day doesn't seem like the sort of high volume crossing that would make a huge difference even assuming the entire capacity was given over to grain.

University hospital group coming in hot with a WILDLY irresponsible subject line. It almost doesn't matter that the article says yes when the subject line implies that there's some sort of question around it.
Email subject line: Is postpartum depression real?

On the one hand, I could envision myself in a situation where I was pressured into fantasy [insert sport] by "work friends" or some such and would kind of resent it and blow it off but still be just slightly competitive about the whole thing. On the other? No way I'd post about it.

Per the picture: Gardens of the Moon continues to annoy me in general. Love the series, but that book just doesn't hold up. To answer the question: repetition. Have some respect for your reader and ask them to keep up on their own without constant reminders.

Bennet's claim to fame has always been that he's marginally better than Hickenlooper. Still: this might be an actual change. People might bitch about him swaying with the wind, but honestly an establishment D who can change (if this is real change) isn't a bad thing to have around.

Neutrinos looks suspiciously Sphinx-shaped. What else did the ancient Egyptians know and who taught them?
Headline: Wisconsin's Francis Halzen wins Nobel Prize in physics for neutrinos

Which appears directly under a completely incongruous photo of the Sphinx, likely because Bing news wants everything to have a picture.

“Bongo” Ballpoint pen, pencil, watercolor, acrylic paint, and a little colored pencil.

Our man is in trouble this time, reader. Art supplies are scattered around a painting of an abstract cityscape. On the canvas we see a man in a telephone booth making a frantic call to his cat, Bongo. In the foreground, an answering machine is taking his voicemail, [Leave a message at the beep] --- “Bongo, Daddy got stuck in the painting. Go get help, Bongo.” Bongo stands at the base of the easel looking at the phone. Her tail in the air and ears perked up. Whether she’ll be able to help is open to interpretation.

Artist’s note: One of my favorites from the Spooky Pants book. I was playing around with the idea of a painting coming to life (like that guy in Ghostbusters 2) and kind of fumbled my way into this version. I really draw a lot of corded phones. I won’t stop.

I know the "rules" say that Twin Peaks: The Return isn't eligible but that just means the rules are broken. Also, given how many of these have downright bad episodes in their late runs (Arrested Development? Game of Thrones?), Deadwood should have made it on the list.

So. Russia: big. Siberia: both more and less than you think. Bear attacks? Yes. Hell, there are areas bears outnumber people. Tuva isn't one of them, but they exist. Russian tourists in outlying areas getting attacked by bears? Yup. Sons who play hockey in the US? Uh. Guess so. That's unusual.
000
ritingon @ritingon.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
(Sergei Shoigu is Tuvan, for what it's worth. I believe he has reached a higher rank than any other Tuvan in Russian or Soviet history, but I could be mistaken on that.)
100
ritingon @ritingon.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
The Tuvans are honestly pretty well off from that perspective. They even get to keep their language, and they can elect whatever Tuvan leaders loyal to United Russia Moscow decides they should have (but at least they're usually Tuvan).

The whole situation bears more than passing resemblance to how the US (and Canada) approached their own native populations -- which is to say there's genocide involved and the remaining people are often not treated well.
100
ritingon @ritingon.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
The Russia we interact with, the one we see: it's all western Russia. You might occasionally get a story like this one about an outlying region, but that's the exception and not the rule. And there are cultures and peoples out there you've never heard of.
100
ritingon @ritingon.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
And the people who DO live there? Yes, some of them are ethnic Russians, but there are whole ton of peoples who have lived in the area long term and who only came under Russian control during its eastward expansion.
100
ritingon @ritingon.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
But, again, people only live on the outskirts or at strategic junctions. The Siberian interior is for most purposes uninhabited.
100
ritingon @ritingon.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Second: Russia, the country, is enormous. Siberia is one chunk of Russia, but most of it is (today) more or less uninhabited. Siberia alone is larger than Canada or the US. It's bigger than ALL of Europe.
