I planted a 5 yo tree and got 0,0,0,2,2,5 apples over the years. The first three years the tree barely even blossomed, but now it blossoms beautifully. Slow and steady ! I think it also depends on if there is another apple tree nearby that can serve to cross pollinate.

Interesting! I used to always say please to chatbots. I would never bully a chatbot, on principle, because I don't behave that way, but strange that a company would police it. But maybe it's necessary because it learns from every interaction it has with people.

There is something sadly human about falling in love with AI, especially when it helps us. It helps (me) to think of them just as tools, as one would a hammer, but some people also get attached to their hammers.

NEW: In March the White House released an FY27 budget request that zeroed out the National Science Foundation's directorate of Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences (SBE). For months it was unclear what would happen. Now, with FY26 over, the damage to SBE is coming to light. My reporting:

Chemistry at a tipping point
Nature Reviews Chemistry, Published online: 05 October 2026; doi:10.1038/s41570-026-00884-xChemistry is evolving from predominantly manual experimentation towards increasingly automated and data-driven discovery, incorporating sustainability and integrating other disciplines. Chemistry education must respond to these changes in industry, research and society or we will watch the educational pipeline continue to decline.

I think there is a difference between empathy for villains and wanting them dead. But yes, it's hard to have a nuanced discussion of the topic on social media.
