10-12 July 1944 | After selections made by SS authorities at the liquidated BIIb sector of #Auschwitz II-Birkenau (a family camp for Jews deported from #Theresienstadt ghetto) ca. 3,000 people were transferred to other camps & the remaining ca. 7,000 were killed in gas chambers.

19 March 1874 | Jewish woman, Thora Mendelsohn (nee Paltiel) was born in Malmö. She moved to Norway in 1894. She arrived at #Auschwitz on 3 March 1943 and was murdered in a gas chamber after arrival selection.

15 March 1938 | A Dutch Jew, Leo Samuel Drukker, was born in Amsterdam. He arrived at #Auschwitz on 5 March 1944 in a transport of 732 Jews from Westerbork. He was among the 477 people murdered after selection in a gas chamber together with his mother Mietje and father Joseph.

On this day in 1911, a Slovakian Jewish man was born. On the 18 May 1942 he was deported to the Theresienstadt Ghetto with his wife and on the 25 May 1942 to the Lublin Ghetto. Both perished in the Shoah, date and location unknown. His name was Ladislav Hegedus

Vera Szasz (b August 13, 1940) - Budapest, Hungary 1/n Vera, the only child of Nanci (LeBlanc) and Miklos Szasz, was a three year-old child when the Germans invaded Hungary in March 1944. She lived in the large, cosmopolitan city of Budapest, where her father was a businessman.

12 March 1912 | Polish Jewish woman Ala Gertner was born in Będzin. She was incarcerated in #Auschwitz in August 1943. She worked in „Union” munition factory from where together with other women she smuggle gunpowder to Sonderkommando resistance. She was hanged on 6 January 1945.

1/n Richard Stern enlisted in the German Army as a teenager and was awarded the prestigious Iron Cross for his distinguished service during World War I. Later, Hitler would send the Hanseatic Cross to Stern for his war merit not realizing Stern was a Jew.

2 March 1943 | A transport of 1,736 Jewish men, women & children arrived at #Auschwitz from Berlin. SS doctors during the selection sent 292 men & 385 women to the camp. The remaining 1,059 people were murdered in gas chambers. One of them was a 7-year old Rut Mandel.

7/n which were refurbished into uniforms for new recruits. The Nazis liquidated the Lodz ghetto at the end of 1944, and Fred was deported to Auschwitz that August. He survived four months in the death camp. From there he was evacuated in early 1945 on a death march to the Dachau.

5/n The Germans established factories in the ghetto, and the Jews were used as slave labor. That winter in the ghetto was bitterly cold. Fred’s father, suffering from starvation, froze to death. Fred’s mother died of starvation several months later.

4/n a Jewish man, to close his business. In October of 1941, the Gestapo arrested Fred and his family. They were sent to the Lodz Ghetto in occupied Poland. The Lodz Ghetto, surrounded by a barbed wire fence, was crammed with more than 150,000 Jewish people.

3/n Fred was born deaf in Vienna in 1920, to Jewish parents who were also deaf. He graduated from the School for the Deaf in Vienna in 1936. At 16 years, he began an apprenticeship in a custom tailor shop. He trained there until 1938, when the Nazis forced the owner of the shop,

2/n Seven year-old Siegfried “Fred” Fedrid pictured with his mother, an aunt, and other cousins in Vienna, circa 1927. Fred was the only survivor of his family. The blanket is an item he had with him during the death march from Auschwitz to Dachau in January 1945.
