if it werent a 6502 machine id probably be more strict but with a cpu like this i think a full user/supervisor split probably eats enough cycles to become a problem

moth compute @risipieces.cd-rom.net · 2h
in my mind the supervisor mode is meant more to prevent mistakes rather than malfeasance. im open to processes messing with stuff but it does have to be more deliberate than overflowing the call stack and jumping into code that accidentally writes a byte in kernel memory for instance

i do want most i/o to be user mapped. the way i plan to do memory protection is to have a supervisor flag set whenever nmi is asserted and cleared by the nmi handler if it chooses on exit, which also makes it easy to provide to a user process

nus-cpu-6. you win some you lose some

moth compute @risipieces.cd-rom.net · 3h
i probably do want to have ram mapped over the vector area but just unmapped when reset is asserted, so that a program can request fast irq handling if need be. itd just only be writable from inside nmi

moth compute @risipieces.cd-rom.net · 3h
pretty much yes. i have some extra considerations like a secondary data stack from 0000-000F and multiple heap banks but stuff like stack swapping and an isolated supervisor stack and heap already factors in. the issue is just that this makes context switches much more expensive

moth compute @risipieces.cd-rom.net · 3h
itd actually be cool to let the computer turn itself off now that i think about it. some way that you could close a relay whereupon either you or the computer could reopen it again

this isnt exactly the 68000 with its spacious 24 bit address space but that can hopefully be smoothed over by just feeding a 65c02 a 10 million hertz clock and just hoping for the best

this all comes with the ultra bonus feature of being able to 'hibernate' the computer by just coring everything and then turning it off
100
moth compute @risipieces.cd-rom.net · 4h
if i just throw in 512k or a megabyte this makes the costs much simpler and cores are easy. its also enough memory that you dont have to swap out programs youre probably in the middle of using, so when you do need to you can also keep working on something or other while its loading from disk
100
moth compute @risipieces.cd-rom.net · 4h
memory either needs to be partitioned extremely finely (lots of banking hardware and software overhead) or all memory accesses have to somehow be os managed (i dont have to explain why this is stupid)
100
moth compute @risipieces.cd-rom.net · 4h
a core is a huge deal here though because there isnt all that much memory to work with, and there cant be a global heap for the core to be reloaded.
100
moth compute @risipieces.cd-rom.net · 4h
manual scheduling goes a long way here given the disk access speeds, where the ux might look like a menu that lets you core dump a process and load it back later. how this works with the filesystem is probably either 'it doesnt' or 'locks are held by the core file'

long time followers will remember the first time i blathered about a 6502 machine meant for swap and multitasking and rest assured i am still thinking about it

apparently it doesnt even have to be decapped... but it probably still has to be replaced to do arbitrary writes

moth compute @risipieces.cd-rom.net · 7h
yeah it looks like the 64dd enforces a read only portion. someone would probably need to decap and replace the h8 to change that reliably

im not confident i can get anything massively useful out of it yet with just the One probe lead but insofar as it is possible to read off some clocks and signal levels without short circuiting something i will be doing that

i suspect part of the problem is unlike most other cs topics very few people are actually implementing these things themselves, so the discussion and background is usually only surface level. the other part is that unlike most other parts of the stack it is largely corporate controlled

i suspect the 6502 is not the best cpu to steal the bus design from but its also not egregious at least

Got a #gamedev question: what are some good resources nowadays for learning 3D math for game development (vectors, matrices, etc.) that’s easy to digest for programmers? It’s been a while since I’ve done linear algebra.
