![[Panel 1:] Seteth holds a smartphone directly up to the Pale Raven with the Merlin Bird ID app open to the sound recording feature.
Seteth: "can you please just. say something into the mic. anything at all."
[Panel 2:] Bird!Eshmel *shrugs in silent protagonist.*](https://cdn.bsky.app/img/feed_thumbnail/plain/did:plc:htogemxiiopihcc4qgmiwkaf/bafkreia6mkxioz3kbm6s5jokze5gp22tgj564k44uuzpmrcsl7czvre3ju)
![Panel 1: Most of the panel is a close-up on a handmade, very careworn field guide to birds, open to the page on the Common Raven. There is a sketch of a raven's head and one of its silhouette in flight, and the notes and descriptions are all written in a neat script. A black feather and small skeleton key are tucked into the binding on the next page. In the background, we see an out-of-focus bird peeking its head just above the top of the book.
Panel 2: The book lowers and the camera rack-focuses on Eshmel in bird form, sitting atop the Pale Raven's Perch, backlit with a sparkling heavenly glow, looking particularly round, derpy, and un-raven-like. There is a sign above their dish that says, "PALE RAVEN / perspective shifts start at 5 seeds"
The text in the field guide reads as follows:
[Page 1] "Common Raven: Distinguishable from other corvids by rasping, throaty vocalizations, tail shape, and "beard" of throat feathers beneath beak. Significantly larger than its nearest relatives; sexes similar in size. Typically all-black iridescent plumage, though leucistic and piebald individuals do make rare appearances."
Illustration captions note "wedge tail," "throat ruff," and "approx. 115cm wingspan (based on shed wing feathers)."
[Page 2 is mostly cropped and covered by the feather; unseen portions are abridged or summarized.] "Observations: Wide variety of vocalizations [...] present year-round [in temperate regions, not found] in tropics or areas [...] [no consistent] migration patterns. Bonded pairs mate for life, [building nests annually of 3-5] chicks on average. [Young ravens depart by their third month.] Earned reputation for cleverness, [author recounts encounters with familiar ravens who gave him trinkets.] Highly omnivorous, [appear to prefer] carrion and human refuse. Mates often fly together [...] Ravens are playful aerialists, [even harassing] wyverns in flight with [little fear.]"](https://cdn.bsky.app/img/feed_thumbnail/plain/did:plc:htogemxiiopihcc4qgmiwkaf/bafkreibacqg7e4zsd4enlkkbpxten62lc557sd4a4o3gvqdkkerujufyjy)
![Speculative designs for a Shadows variant of Roy based on a red panda. Chibi style, very unserious; lineart and colors are digital and flat, but the pencil sketch remains underneath, marginalia included.
Left: Neutral form; has panda ears, tail, and red stripes running up his cheeks toward his eyes. Tufts of white fur strike out from under his ears. His eyebrows are slightly bushier and white on the outer ends. He looks ahead with tense determination, trying in vain to offset his cuddly appearance.
Right: Shadow form; full panda mode, striking a mean paws-up intimidation pose. Clothes are mostly intact, minus his boots and gloves. A little belly fluff is poking out between the plackets of his overshirt. His eyes are glowing purple and his mouth is wide open in what appears to be a roar, but is more accurately an aggressive squeak.
Notes:
[Top:] I'm doing this under protest 😐
[Left, pointing to Roy's ear:] the pointiest I will ever draw his ears LOL
[Right:] honestly they're never going to get him to look cool as a lion so like......](https://cdn.bsky.app/img/feed_thumbnail/plain/did:plc:htogemxiiopihcc4qgmiwkaf/bafkreibi25ugd3joi4qwjid5p4pz3htbpvmrczx3ewgeyitbwwzvhfowsu)
![A comic in the format of the "Toothless Presents Himself" meme.
[Panel 1:] In the reception hall, Flayn performs her (chicken) dance for the White Heron Dance Contest. We can see the backs of judges Alois and Manuela's heads in the foreground; in the background, Dorothea and Sylvain sit and watch, representing their respective houses in the contest. Dorothea crosses her arms and legs and scowls at this apparently low-effort contest entry, while Sylvain is curled forward, elbows propped on his knees, eyes wide, hands over his mouth, looking like he's watching a multi-car pileup happen in front of him.
The meme text overlaid on Flayn is in fancy lettering, invoking her voice: "me, attempting the 'Dance of the Jungle Fowl' for my White Heron Cup audition."
[Panel 2:] Reverse shot of Alois (putting on a brave face), Manuela (actively cringing), and Shamir (just confused).
Flayn (narration): "the judges, aghast"
[Panel 3:] Claude peeks out from behind the doorway, giving Flayn an enthusiastic thumbs-up.
Flayn (narration): "my house leader, at whose insistence I performed this mortifying spectacle"](https://cdn.bsky.app/img/feed_thumbnail/plain/did:plc:htogemxiiopihcc4qgmiwkaf/bafkreiakib6n5mtuh6gajamacqqvw77ziaqnrs56i7eeqgjbvp2o3vgslm)
![[Panel 1:] Roy and Eliwood circa FE6. Eliwood is bracing Roy's shoulders and wearing a supportive smile; Roy looks exasperated and is beginning to blush. They're implicitly in the midst of polite conversation at some kind of party.
Eliwood: "Yes, Super Smash Brothers! So you know of it! / My son is one of the top-ranked competitors in the world, actually."
Roy: "no I'm not"
Eliwood: "'Smashletes,' they're called."
Roy: "they're not called that"
Eliwood: "Remind me, who were some of the other ones...?"
Roy: "I don't know... like... [smaller:] M-Mr. Game and Watch...?"
Eliwood: "Oh, come on."
Roy: "Dad... they don't want to hear about—"](https://cdn.bsky.app/img/feed_thumbnail/plain/did:plc:htogemxiiopihcc4qgmiwkaf/bafkreihn2s4c53r4ooik6gd4xo62qpes6p46s4qa53ptwygqkembc43phu)
![[Panel 2:] Eliwood, looking a little more confident in his line of conversation, gestures towards his guests with one hand and continues to grip Roy's shoulder with the other, a little firmer now that Roy is actively trying to sink out of sight, blushing intensely and staring downward with a grimace.
Eliwood: "Pikachu? / Do you know who Pikachu is? / Of course you do. Well, Pikachu was there, along with a few other Pokey-mon."
Roy, under his breath: "oh for—"
Eliwood: "Yes, Super Mario as well!"
Roy: "it's just mario"
Eliwood: "And what was the porcupine's name? Somniac or some such...?"
Roy: "*Sonic,* and he's a hedgehog, and I *know* you're doing this on purpose—"
Eliwood, talking over him: "Anyway, Somniac the porcupine ["SONIC THE HEDGEHOG" in Roy's voice underpins this atrocity] is a favorite to win the whole thing, but Roy's given him a run for his money!"
Roy: [tiny text] "will someone please either warp me or kill me"](https://cdn.bsky.app/img/feed_thumbnail/plain/did:plc:htogemxiiopihcc4qgmiwkaf/bafkreihdnj5sjexyq3vnwr4fqgdamzdq6dmamhx4ci3dxqlunkeyggrgye)
![[Panel 1:] Flayn follows behind Seteth down an outdoor corridor of Garreg Mach. He's carrying two baby wyverns (Nadine, sleeping, and Beauregard, attempting to eat his hair), while Flayn holds the other one (Latona, squirming playfully).
Flayn, with music notes trailing behind her: "Ah, Latona! / You are *ever* such a lovely potat. / Indeed, a potat among potats!"
Seteth, glancing back at her with a bemused smile: "What is it you keep calling them?"
[Panel 2:] Flayn looks up at Seteth with a bit of a self-conscious grin.
Flayn: "Potats? / Why, that is simply what they are called!"
[Panel 3:] Close-up on Latona as Flayn holds her aloft, a burst of stylized light crowning the baby wyvern's head as she smiles shyly.
Flayn: "I suppose it is something to do with how small and lumpy they are. / And just the right array of colors to boot! / In short, the form of a baby wyvern irresistibly calls to mind that of a potato." [that last speech bubble is also shaped like a potato.]
[Panel 4:] Seteth looks back, visibly confused. Beauregard is now clambering over his shoulder in a bid for the tassels on his cape. Flayn, looking much more self-assured now, cuddles Latona in the foreground, breaking the bounds of the panel somewhat.
Seteth: "Then... should they not be 'potatoes'? / I'm... afraid I don't quite understand...."
Flayn: "I would scarcely expect you to."](https://cdn.bsky.app/img/feed_thumbnail/plain/did:plc:htogemxiiopihcc4qgmiwkaf/bafkreia3ztmhhgtmphncf2buaepx3gcgwwsexr6co2n2lkh36jvlrkdq34)
![[Panel 1:] Waist-up shot of Seteth and Flayn on the Rhodos Coast during their paralogue, the sky a light gray. Seteth is looking out of frame, a bit wistful, stroking the back of Flayn's head while she looks up at him with a cautious smile, fingering the ends of her hair-drills.
Flayn: "We can tell Professor Eisner about Mother, can't we?"
Seteth: "...Yes, I suppose the time is right."
[Panel 2] pans out to an establishing shot of the St. Cichol monument (presumably at low tide, connected to the mainland). Seteth, Flayn, and Lessie stand next to it in silhouette. Please imagine as beautiful a seaside landscape as you can I did such a good job on this—
Seteth: "This site... it has more significance than merely being a sacred location for the Church."
Lessie: "What, that isn't enough significance?"
Seteth: "More... personal significance, I mean. / You see, my wife is buried here."
Lessie: "Oh... I'm sorry. But hang on— wasn't Flayn asking about your mom?"
[Panel 3:] Back to Seteth and Flayn; this time she's standing directly in front of him, clapping her hands together with a bright smile. Seteth holds her shoulders, allowing himself a more hesitant smile.
Flayn: "Indeed, I was!"
Seteth: "Right... that is essentially what we wanted to tell you. / Flayn is actually my daughter."
[Panel 4:] Close-up on Lessie against an abstract background of seeping dark purple lines to match the shadow over her own wide, aghast eyes. Her frown is deep, her overall expression oozing disgust and horror, the only thought she is able to muster a tiny, handwritten "wat."](https://cdn.bsky.app/img/feed_thumbnail/plain/did:plc:htogemxiiopihcc4qgmiwkaf/bafkreieuxiljdl4mnxg3pksga24bvn5d2dgjneea6zrunqtshmynh7j7nu)
![[Panel 5:] Reverse shot of Seteth and Flayn, both beginning to furrow their brows in confusion at Lessie's appalled reaction. The only sound or movement is the ocean breeze.
[Panel 6:] Slight zoom as they realize their mistake, their expressions now echoing Lessie's.
Seteth, waving his hands rapidly in front of him: "OH— NO NO NO NO NO" [Starts between panels in an impact bubble, with each NO in its own fragmented bubble.]
Flayn, holding a hand to her chin as if gasping: "Oh! Ew! No!!" [also in an impact bubble]
Seteth: "That's *not—*"
Flayn: "We're not siblings!!"
Seteth: "We are *NOT* siblings!"
[Panel 7:] Back to Lessie as she throws her hands up dramatically. She still looks rattled but has at least found her voice.
Lessie: "Well, it's a good thing we're already at a gravesite— / —'cause ya **REALLY** buried the lead on that one!!"
[Panel 8:] Lessie squats down and places one hand on the base of the monument, now looking almost solemn.
Lessie: "...No offense, Mrs. Crabgrass. / It's not your fault your husband is an idiot."
Behind her, Seteth buries his face in his hands, steam pouring off him as he burns with embarrassment. Flayn leans her head on his shoulder and pats his arm, looking sympathetic but clearly fighting the urge to laugh.](https://cdn.bsky.app/img/feed_thumbnail/plain/did:plc:htogemxiiopihcc4qgmiwkaf/bafkreibr5abhfwrbhh6p2uerisr2ruslr4w5lzmngpak2u3lw6p7rwj7k4)
