Despite Gygax being a mythology buff, the Amazon depicted in OD&D has two breasts. I think Mr. Gygax should go back and reread his Bullfinch's Mythology! (The Beautiful Witch is Canonically Accurate, though!)

Subduing dragon inspiration? PERHAPS

The right way to learn about the right answer is to be wrong on the internet.

Why did these rules exist for dragons and not any other type of monster? Why did these rules exist at all? I have no clue and no context on that. But the world-building implications of the setting of OD&D, with dragon markets in *every* major town, and dragons being ridden by NPCs/PCs, is wild.

Rise Up (From the Grave) Comus @riseupcomus.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
The rules for subduing dragons is to express the percentage of HP lost by the dragon, then use it as a chance to subdue it. Subdued dragons are cowed and ruled by the PC. They now have a dragon! They can also sell it at market. We are told that EVERY town of good size has such a market! Baffling! +

In Book 2: Monsters & Treasure, we encounter the titular dragons. They're almost like Pokemon, with a list of elemental breaths, strengths, and weaknesses. In the middle of these stats, we get rules for Subduing Dragons. +

In the most recent episode of Between 2 Cairns, reviewing B5 - Horror on the Hill, our hosts were befuddled over the conclusion that discussed "subduing the dragon." Dragon subduing is one of the bizarre quirks of White Box OD&D that has been lost to time. A small 🧵of explanation:

Four reasons why I think MÖRK BORG's index is good. 1. It's divided into three sections so that you can quickly filter to the third you're looking for and not have to sift through as many irrelevant entries. If you're looking for a thing in the Rules, you just ignore The World and Creatures.

That's how it works in Lore, my little LotR adventure game retroclone. You record both languages you start with + discover that you know and languages you establish mid-game that you do not know. For example, this dwarf started with Westron and the dwarf tongues, but established he did NOT know boar

I'm working on spells for this "fairytale fantasy" setting I've been toodling on. I think I'm cooking with my version of Charm Person.
Love ★
[rune placeholder]
Duration: Until broken
Range: 120'

You weave an enchantment that forces a single human, demi-human, or humanoid monster to save with counter-spell or fall madly in love with you.
Love: The subject regards you with an ardent but virtuously-chaste amorous feeling. They will come to your defence in combat, generally acquiesce to your requests, and attempt to please you with sickeningly sweet displays of affection.
Subject's nature: The subject will refuse requests that contradict their habits or self interest. They will propose suitable alternative ideas: annoying poetry, kissing your fingertips, etc.
Jealousy: An enchanted subject cannot bear the sight of a rival lover. Two or more subjects of the love spell will ignore commands until they fight each other.
Restrictions: Humanoids of greater than 4+1 HD and undead are not affected.
Duration: This enchantment lasts indefinitely, but the subject is allowed to make further saves with counter-spell each time the following triggers:
Whenever you outright reject their advances
Whenever they make a Morale check
At the dawn of every day
Whenever this save succeeds, the spell ends.

Rereading old blog posts, and Grognardia reminded me of this essential truth: "don't design rules with bad players in mind. Any rule, no matter how well written, can and will be abused by players looking to find a way to take advantage of a situation."

This is a HUGE contribution to tooling for running games at the table. DirectSun is burying the lede a little. He has made a web template that lets you have clickable maps, preview hyperlinks, and have multiple views of an adventure open at once. This is an incredible resource for GMs!
