Good data is the differentiator here I think. Lots of ways to get good data on objectively verifiable math and by extension coding. None of the models can do game design because humans can't come up with a coherent game design ethos. Studios with decades of experience fail game design all the time.

I'm seeing local community forums becoming relevant again since they're unpolluted by issues of the wider internet and everyone is essentially verified and related by language, geography, etc. New people join largely by word of mouth, and our own outreach at IRL events.

The demo is so awful that I suspect it's just shit companies do for investor sentiment these days. They're operating in climate where Unity stock crashed because of things like Google Genie, which is just a glorified video generator and is nowhere near making game engines irrelevant, yet...

I was a graph theory junkie long ago and even moved to Budapest for awhile to study among the greats. While I was there I started working on Barnette's Conjecture which came to occupy my thoughts over the next 24 years of my life, on and off as I worked in many different fields. Last summer I even thought for a few days that I had actually solved it. But it's supposedly proven here - problem 180. I don't know what to think exactly. I spent thousands of hours on that problem. I really enjoyed it. Hearing that it is solved somehow makes me sad in a far-off way, like hearing an ex-girlfriend died suddenly in a car crash. I don't know, there's probably a lot of people feeling odd emotions tonight. There's no Lean proof for this one so I'm digesting the paper. On the surface it looks like an approach I considered 24 years ago and abandoned.
I revisited the problem this summer, along with my partial solutions, when the previous round of stunning proofs came out. Several hours of work with Fable simply convinced me it wasn't yet solvable and reinforced how hard of a problem it was.

I have very little understanding of higher math, so I ask you: Was the proof due to a type of brute-force solution that could be solved had you gained enough information from reading others' work, or was it more like a proof that was sparked by an insight that came once a clue on how to solve it was put forward? I guess my question is: Was the problem proven by using a collection of everyone's work, or was it due to a brand-new insight?

Hi I'm still digesting the proof and translating a bit from the dual case back to the primal in which I most commonly thought about it. I don't think it was a brute force proof in the sense that it combined every possible paper and commentary. It's rather odd because I feel like most of the work on the conjecture was focused on an induction proof based around graph reductions, and this proof avoided those issues entirely by offering a concrete constructive proof of finding a Hamiltonian cycle. Rather, it explicitly selected the edges not in the Hamiltonian cycle, which is in line with previous attempts via the dual.
The "oho" insight for this is actually f**ing wild, it involves a complex valued exponential sum on the edges. I've seen a lot of clever counting arguments before in graph theory but this is the first time I've seen complex roots and annihilating terms like this, the symbolic manipulation tricks in this look like things out of quantum physics. I don't understand where this trick originated, I need to really digest this.

I went back to that Fable chat and showed it this new preprint. It coded up the new constructive algorithm and ran it against the existing test suite, that looks good at least.
It has been super helpful in delineating where the crucial concept came from. The proof is rather simple as graph theory proofs go, but it does seem to use some constructions that would only seem obvious if you had serious physics experience with partition function and calculating energy states that cancel out. It's not a wholly alien bolt from the heavens, but I can also see how there hasn't been a human being with the broad theoretical physics knowledge combined with the deep graph theory experience in planar graphs to come up with this idea. I don't know, I'm looking for precedents of this formulation and some old papers of Penrose counting the number of edge colorings of this same graph type are coming up, the line of argument at least rhymes. But I agree with the thought that this sort of progress should not be siloed inside those companies. I propose a tax so that every slop cannon Al video pays for another hour of compute time for advancing mathematics.

itch is anywhere from 0-5% revenue for a typical indie, it might as well not exist business wise. It's great for testing ideas out early and community building, it has it's place in the ecosystem, it just doesn't provide a living for any significant amount of users the platform has.

No human can agree on what makes good game design. AAA studios with decades of experience and highly polished development processes fail game design all the time. So models can't do it either. As things currently are, humans are still necessary as part of the process.

Arnis Vaivars @rinvars.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Models are only decent for what they can be post trained in, which is math, code and 3D (to a degree). Because they are highly structured forms of language that have mechanisms of verification - compilers, humans agreeing on what is good vs bad data, etc.

by some reports inference has 50-80% margins, the expensive part is new model training. even if they go under, the models are not disappearing. plenty if interested parties like Google and Amazon with existing infra to deliver inference on cheaper per token prices than currently.

Arnis Vaivars @rinvars.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
internet didn't go away after the dotcom bubble. I don't think llms are either. open weight models are not dependent on the big two for selling inference on the cheap. and someone like Amazon will likely buy up openai/anthropic pre-trained models and sell inference with none of the RD cost.

software support services with specialization in Unity engine. Then fingers crossed they don't know what that is. And if they do, they usually ask about the engine, not games so a small win in my books.

Dumbing RPG systems down to create a mass market product that degrades in quality with every release in practically all departments doesn't feel like force for good. It's been trending down since Morrowind. Obsidian made the best Bethesda game in recent memory.

Yea, there's a lot of social/team sports aspect to AI discourse online. I was never much of a team sports guy but these short form blogging platforms really want to sort you into one, which has lead to a lot of grief by people assuming I'm pro AI just by stating some observations.

A version of the "Aella's birthday gangbang" Sankey diagram but it's about Bluesky posters thinking about posting Sankey diagram jokes, leading from "thought about Sankey diagram joke" through various iterations of workshopping and writing the joke (with various dead ends due to forgetting about it, losing interest, etc). Eventually at the end the joke is finally posted; some posters do numbers with it, some don't, some came in a fluffer

Under real market forces I'm not seeing people rejecting AI unless it's a smaller individual with no audience that can be review bombed into algorithmic irrelevance on Steam. AA/AAA meanwhile do what ever they want.

Unreal Engine had like two instances of em dashes in its code until like half a year ago and suddenly the code base is chuck full of them in the hundreds if not thousands of instances. This now powers a lot of current and upcoming AAA games.

I feel like the average gamer never cared much. ARC Raiders is chuck full of AI, CEO of Embark has publicly talked about having an AI 3D generated model pipeline for both ARC and The Finals cash shops. They had the AI voice thing too. Only thing players care about is cheating in ARC and no endgame.

probz direct correlation to life becoming increasingly unaffordable. My food expenditure has increased by at least 50% without change of habits. my rent+ utilities by 70%. my income has not radically increased in that time in comparison. so yeah... I do find myself in that loop as well.

As long as VISA/Mastercard are calling the shots, nothing will change since Steam can't review thousands of games manually and granularly enough to determine compliance with payment processors. It's less risk to blanket ban/adult filter any topic approaching the fence even if it doesn't cross it.

Arnis Vaivars @rinvars.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
yeah, you can't tell certain stories covering the human experience on Steam at all even with the adult label on while being able to see that type of content in AAA games or TV no problem. But I think that's more on the payment processor censorship than Steam itself.
