Well... I successfully defended my PhD today. Which means I can finally say: Hello, I'm Dr Erin Johanson. 🎓🥹 (Please allow me to be absolutely insufferable about this for at least the next six months.) #PhD #History #MentalHealthHistory
Victorian-style painting of a frog in formal clothing with overlaid text: "Gentlemen, it is my great pleasure to inform you that I have successfully defended my thesis." A humorous meme celebrating the completion of a PhD viva.

🚨 ESSENTIAL INFORMATION KLAXON 🚨
A studio photograph of the man, the myth, the legend, PHIL COLLINS seated at a drum kit, holding drumsticks and leaning casually on a tom drum. He faces the camera with a calm, confident expression. Large cymbals and stage lights frame him from behind, giving the scene a warm, professional concert-style atmosphere.
Above text reads: "PSA: If you hit play on "In The Air Tonight" by Phil Collins at 11:56:20PM this New Year's Eve, the drum fill will welcome you into 2026. Start the year the right way."

Sussex County Asylum Christmas, 1871. Service at 11, dinner at 1, a walk if weather allows, then evening entertainment and lights out at 11.15. Small comforts, even in confinement. #AsylumHistory #VictorianBritain #ArchiveFind #MedicalHumanities #HistoryOfMentalHealth #ChristmasPast #historian
A black and white photographed page titled “Christmas Arrangements” from the Sussex County Asylum, dated December 1871. It lists the Christmas Day schedule in decorative handwritten script, including workshops and laundry closed, divine service at 11 am, patients’ dinner at 1 pm, a country walk in the afternoon, and evening activities in the class room. It also notes that the porter will lock the doors and ring the bell for lights out at 11.15 pm. Below, it lists entertainment in the recreation hall on December 26, a patients’ Christmas ball on December 27, and a household ball on January 2, 1872.

The admission records from the Sussex County Asylum during my research period follow a strict convention, with recurring phrases like "a lost & demented state" or "as lost & confused as ever." While this consistency aids transcription, does it obscure the true experiences of the patients? #History
Handwritten medical notes on a lined form document. The text is divided into sections titled "Further Remarks," "Bodily Condition on Admission," and "Mental State on Admission." The notes detail the admission of an elderly male patient who was apprehended by the police on August 7, 1906, for causing a disturbance. Descriptions include his physical condition (e.g., "fairly nourished old man," "tongue coated and tremulous," "bruises on front of chest") and mental state (e.g., "tremulous, lost, confused," "speech indistinct and thick," "emotional, burst into tears saying his wife is dead"). It also mentions his disorientation and lack of awareness about time or location. The handwriting is in cursive and varies in legibility.

A cropped image of handwritten notes on lined paper, detailing patient observations in a medical record. The text includes dates and descriptions of the patient's condition, with phrases such as "at times wet," "not so restless," "in the same confused state," and "as lost as ever." The handwriting is in cursive, moderately legible, and the notes appear to track changes in the patient's behavior or state over time. Specific treatments or observations like "Chloral & Brom" and "quieter night" are mentioned.

I had the pleasure of seeing them live twice this summer. They are incredible.
A stage setup with a medieval aesthetic, featuring a drum kit and a microphone stand in front of a backdrop resembling a stone archway with a wooden gate. The stage is decorated with ornate items, including tall candles on stands, a drinking horn, and goblets, giving a ceremonial or gothic feel. A banner at the front of the stage reads "Trobar de Morte" with an image of torches and an eclipse-like design. Subtle purple lighting adds to the atmosphere.

A group photo featuring six individuals dressed in gothic and medieval-inspired outfits. Four of them wear elaborate costumes with dark tones, feathers, lace, and symbolic accessories, including painted masks and pentagram jewelry. In the center, a woman with bright red hair stands out, wearing a casual outfit of a red blouse and denim shorts, accessorized with sunglasses and a decorated walking stick. The backdrop features the "Trobar de Morte" logo and gothic designs, indicating a themed event or performance setting.

Just a quick dive into my #PhD research! I’m investigating patient experiences at the Sussex County Asylum from 1890 to 1913. This period reveals powerful insights into mental health care's history, societal views, and patients' lives often overlooked in traditional records.
This image shows a historical ledger page titled "Detained in Workhouse," documenting entries related to pauper lunatics held in workhouses. The format includes detailed sections filled in by hand, likely by medical officers and administrators, who recorded information about each patient's mental and physical condition.

Key sections include:

- **Certification Details**: Notes by medical officers about the patients' mental state and reasons for their detention in the workhouse. Each entry describes symptoms, including "delusions," "aimless" behavior, and conditions such as "heart decline."
- **Discharge Information**: Includes the dates and reasons for discharge, with annotations like "To County Asylum," "To House," or "Died." Some entries list specific dates alongside reasons or destinations.
- **Examination Results on Discharge**: Mentions physical observations such as "no marks or bruises," as well as "heart decline & dropsy."

The document provides a glimpse into the historical treatment and classification of mental health cases within the workhouse system, using language indicative of the period’s medical understanding. This image shows a detailed entry from a historical asylum record, documenting the case of a patient admitted on **June 28, 1910**, diagnosed with **melancholia acuta**. The record includes various structured sections with handwritten information:

- **Patient Information and History**: Notes details such as hereditary factors, duration of attack (7 days), and mentions of previous episodes. There is also information about whether the patient is subject to epilepsy or suicidal tendencies (both marked "No").
- **Physical Condition on Admission**: Describes the patient as being in generally good condition with no major abnormalities but notes some specifics, such as heavy hands and the right pulse being of high pressure.
- **Mental State on Admission**: The notes detail the patient’s mental struggles, describing them as "very depressed" and feeling "miserable," with no clear cause for their troubles. The patient is said to find "every room a misery" and lacks insight into the root of their distress.
- **Additional Observations**: There is a note that the patient refuses food, indicating possible further complications in treatment or care.

This document provides a meticulous look at the historical approach to mental health assessment, with specific focus on both physical and mental observations upon admission.
