Incidentally, the construction detailed above also bears much resemblance to Kant's Transcendental Idealism (超越論哲学).
To borrow Kant's words, what we are aware of is "Phenomena", and beyond that is an "Object-itself" (物自体) that we cannot gain knowledge of.[^12] Lacan's The Real roughly corresponds to this Object-itself of Kant's. Kant said that it is impossible able to speak of things as they really are, and redefines philosophy as something that attempts to analyze how humans conceive of things. This places transcendental idealism in an equivalence to early modern philosophies.[^13] As of Freud's influence on psychoanalysis, there is also introduced the dimension of "Sex"[^14]which poses the question of whether a subject possessing subconsciousness experiences sexual thoughts (essentially, is desirous towards) things. Looked at this way, psychoanalysis is the successor to early modern philosophy.
