I’ve been listening to Christopher’s 1991 debut solo album “Pacific Coast Highway,” which definitely has some 1980s Tangerine Dream influences. It’s pretty cool to hear what he was up to since he left Tangerine Dream in 1987. Really nice sounding stuff. 👍

Since my set on Friday, I’ve been exploring more ambient music produced by Private Music, a defunct record label whom Patrick O’Hearn was associated with until 1995. That’s when I learned about former Tangerine Dream band member Christopher Franke, who is known for his Babylon 5 music scores.

This week's Micro_Monday project involves playing a MIDI file from an SD card. The SD slot is part of my data logging shield for Arduino, with a MIDI shield stacked on top of it, connected via the ESi MIDImate EX USB MIDI interface, which I originally bought for my Alesis SR-16 drum machine.

It was very heartbreaking to hear Mika crying while we were in the car this morning. 😭 We're preparing for the worst, but praying for the best for Mika. The vet is working on running some blood/lab work, and removing the mats from Mika's fur. We'll know more this afternoon. 🤞

This week's Micro_Monday project demonstrates scrolling text on a 14-segment 4-digit display, run by the HT16K33 driver chip. The display is receiving data using I2C, which allows devices to be run on only two data lines: data and clock Next week, I'll be playing with MIDI on the Arduino. 😉

I soldered two thin wires to the tiny pads, ran the wires out the back through a hole made with my Dremel, and crimped a couple of female pin sockets to the wires, to make changing capacitors fast and easy, resulting in different snare decay lengths, and most importantly, better snare sound quality.

After hearing so many complaints about the snare drum sound on the Korg Volca Beats and how it can be corrected with a single capacitor, I decided to open my unit up and try my hand at modding it. I've never worked with solder pads that are so tiny; thank heavens my soldering iron has a fine tip.

Also worthy of note, this is the ICSP header I was using for the project. I did this for cross-compatibility between many Arduino boards.

Elegoo Arduino Uno R3 microcontroller board with a fleece blanket as a background. A red box has been drawn around the ICSP header that I used for the project. This header was chosen due to its compatibility across nearly every Arduino board.

I would describe the Volca Beats snare sound as being a bit gritty and similar in character to the snare sounds of the Korg KR-55 from 1979, and the Korg KPR-77 from 1982. Lucky for Korg, I love the sounds of both drum machines. ^^

My third and final Korg Volca has been ordered: the Volca Beats, which is a drum machine with 10 drum sounds - 6 analog, 4 sampled. After listening to demos on YouTube, I've noticed that a lot of people hate how its snare drum sounds. But as Charli XCX would say: I don't care - I love it.

Worth noting that the DX7 II Centennial Edition and a regular DX7 II sound exactly the same, but differ only in the way they look; the Centennial has a silver chassis, gold-plated controls, and glow in the dark keys. The Centennial DX7 was produced to celebrate Yamaha’s 100th anniversary in 1987.

A supplement to yesterday’s Micro_Monday project. The soft white filament that I chose for the key bed and the light strip diffuser actually glow in the dark! 😄 I did this as a nod to the rare Yamaha DX7 II Centennial Edition synthesizer from 1987, whose white keys also glow in the dark.

Using rechargeable LED UV flashlight to charge up the green glow 3-D printed parts.

The keys and the LED strip diffuser after the UV flashlight was turned off.
