One of my new favorite words,“Sonder”: the realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own, with their own ambitions, friends, routines, worries, and inherited craziness. The awareness that everyone has a story.

To decide where to start the story--so. freaking. hard.--consider: What everyday conflict does it make sense that your MC would be dealing with riiiiight before they encounter that spark? Start there. #RevPit #10Queries

A more metaphorical way to think about it: What's the very first tiny spark that lights the match that will set their world on fire? We need to see that in the first 5-10 pages. #RevPit #10Queries

Taking that a step further-- What is the first small thing that changes in your MC's world that makes them put one foot on the path that will eventually lead them to the first *big* change (aka the inciting event)? That first small change is the hook. #RevPit #10Queries

IN GENERAL (yes, there are some exceptions) we shouldn't be trying to get the MC embroiled in the main conflict of the plot on pg 1. Instead, focus on an everyday conflict in the MC's life. We all deal with dozens of conflicts each day. What's one for your MC? #RevPit #10Queries

Opening scenes are hard. Like really freaking hard. You have to get a lot of info into a small space AND hook the reader AND get them oriented without TOO MUCH info, and it can feel impossible. PLUS even when you get an agent and a pub, you might have to change it. Again. #RevPit #10Queries

Person 2: "BYE!"
