Molecular Biology and Evolution | September 2026 cover

A comic-style ivory-eyed drone makes his first (and likely last) flight from Apiary City. Shultz and colleagues tracked a recessive deleterious mutation from its birth to death in honey bees (https://doi.org/10.1093/molbev/msag156). Two drones are shown emerging from the comb, highlighting the mutant eye phenotype. The left honeycomb stack depicts the multi-omic approach used to fully characterize the ivory phenotype. Artwork by Riley Shultz.

Shultz @beeharpur.bsky.social et al. documented the trajectory of a spontaneous deleterious mutation from its origin in a single queen to its extinction, directly observing how haplodiploidy exposes recessive alleles to immediate purifying selection 🔗 doi.org/10.1093/molbev/msag156 #societyjournal
