The latest from #UKSGInsights "The pivotal relationship between librarians and postgraduate researchers: a case study" by Siti Aisyah Binti Shamshun Baharin and @hannahcrago.bsky.social - dub.sh/j9uu3Rz
For the past decade, the relationship between librarians and postgraduate researchers (PGRs) has remained underexplored, despite its potential significance for research success and academic development. This case study examines how a former PGR and a librarian developed multiple partnerships through different avenues of engagement, resulting in a sustained professional relationship that enhanced both the PGR’s journey and the evolving role of the librarian. The article further highlights how such partnerships can foster academic excellence, research progression and mutual learning. It concludes with practical recommendations for higher education institutions seeking to strengthen the relationships between PGRs and librarians and to create a more supportive and impactful research environment.

The latest from #UKSGInsights: "Well‑being support and further education libraries: supporting the whole student" by @rhuski.bsky.social at @derbycollege.bsky.social dub.sh/ffB7USA
Abstract: Recent years have seen increased interest in well‑being support within academic libraries, yet UK further education (FE) libraries remain under‑researched in this area. This study, utilizing a cross‑sectional survey conducted in England in May 2025, collected 42 responses to explore the drivers, approaches, challenges and impact of student well‑being support in FE libraries. Analysis involved quantitative methods alongside content analysis of open‑ended questions. The findings indicate various drivers suggesting a non‑targeted strategy, frequently integrated with core services. While a wide array of approaches exists, collection‑based initiatives are most prevalent. Strong evidence of cross‑college partnership and initiative evaluation was found; however, this data often failed to demonstrate clear impact to senior leadership. Primary barriers include limited staff time and budgets, alongside difficulties in fostering engagement and promotion. These results largely align with broader academic library literature. Key recommendations emphasize adopting a strategic approach to well‑being that aligns with specific college priorities. Depending on available resources, libraries should prioritize demonstrating the impact of core services rather than overstretching by introducing initiatives beyond their primary scope. This ensures that well‑being support remains sustainable and relevant within the FE context.

New from #UKSGInsights "The ‘Sub-editor model’: integrating apprenticeship into editorial decision-making for acquiring scholarly communication skills" by Virgil Grandfield et al @ulethbridge.ca dub.sh/dWl7eyS
This practice article describes a work-integrated learning initiative at the Lethbridge Journal Incubator (JI) that embeds graduate students in editorial decision-making as a method of active, hands-on, disciplinary professionalization, in the context of standard scholarly decision-making. Over the past decade, the JI has shifted from minimal student participation – where students performed only back-office and line-by-line editing tasks – to a recursive training model where students are asked to assist editors by preparing detailed assessments of submissions in response to real-time feedback from referees and editors.

"Rather than framing OA as inherently more or less prone to integrity failures, the article argues that these challenges reflect broader incentive structures within (scholcomm)." Fair enough, the issue isn't OA itself. The issue is APCs, which are an OA-specific issue. Let's not lose sight of that.

Our latest from #UKSGInsights: "Goals and evaluations of transformative agreements: an exploratory study of consortial approaches" by Monica Ward dub.sh/w6yFVfS
Since the first transformative agreement (TA) in 2015, engagement in TAs has increased, as evidenced by the growing number of agreements in the Efficiencies Standards for Article Charges (ESAC) TA registry. This study aims to determine whether library consortia involved in TAs have clear goals and if they assess the agreements they negotiate. These two questions are answered by a literature review and an examination of websites and reports from 18 consortia with 15 or more TAs in the ESAC registry. The findings indicate that most consortia in the sample had a defined goal and had undertaken some form of assessment, although the depth and breadth of both varies widely. Some of the main themes that emerged were cost-neutrality, an increase in open access (OA) papers and a desire to pay for publishing rather than subscriptions. A key takeaway of this investigation was the importance of evaluating each agreement individually, due to the vast differences between TAs. An overarching theme was the role of research assessment practices, journal prestige and the perceived need for researchers to publish in certain publications – all factors that constrain libraries’ decisions to engage in TAs.

The latest from #UKSGInsights: Interdisciplinary collaboration for open research: reflections by Graduate Engagement Leads by Katie Vernon, Yorgos Paschos and Luqman Muraina from @uoylibrary.bsky.social dub.sh/UFKM2yf
This case study provides an in-role reflection by the Graduate Engagement Leads for Open Research at the University of York. It uses the methodologies of reflection in practice and reflection-on-the-future to explore the challenges, such as gaps in provision and knowledge between different disciplines, and opportunities, such as instigating new initiatives, that the Leads have faced. The case study integrates personal reflections on how the role has changed the Leads’ outlooks and knowledge of open research, and how they hope to promote an open research culture in their professional and academic work. It also reflects on the anticipated future impacts of the role, such as through updating online resources for training and advocacy, as well as reflecting on how the role has influenced our approach to open research. Through reflecting on the role, it is hoped that this case study might provide a model for how PhD candidates working in open research and scholarly communications library teams can promote open research communities of practice and help to ensure their longevity.

The latest from #UKSGInsights: Olivia Edmonds and Taran Johal @uwtsd.bsky.social "The digital library: redefining access and engagement at University of Wales Trinity St David, Birmingham campus" dub.sh/xomcW9U
This article explores the transformative role of the digital library at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD), particularly within the Institute of Inner‑City Learning’s (IICL) Birmingham campus, where students engage exclusively with online resources. It highlights the collaborative efforts of academic liaison librarians and digital skills advisors in delivering a fully digital library service that is both inclusive and future ready. Emphasizing the importance of digital literacy, personalized support and curriculum integration. The article underscores how library services contribute directly to student success and employability. It argues that strategic investment in digital library infrastructure and support services enhances academic outcomes and prepares students for the evolving demands of the workforce. Ongoing challenges, including digital equity, accessibility and the ethical implications of AI are also addressed, while a future of expanded access, increased staff engagement and deeper integration into the academic experience is envisioned.

Two debaters argue for and against the proposition. This will be a formal debate, with the result decided by the impact of the arguments on all the Conference participants. An initial ‘baseline’ vote is taken at the start of the debate, and another vote is taken at the end. The winner is the side that has swayed opinion in their favour.
