Richard Pomfret @richpomf.bsky.social · 15hHow would you define spirituality? (I'm not trying to be awkward!) 110
Richard Pomfret @richpomf.bsky.social · 16hI'd agree with your last paragraph, except that I think there are exceptions to your last sentence. Lord Shaftesbury is an example. 100
Richard Pomfret @richpomf.bsky.social · 16hIf he believed this he would be a fool. But he doesn't - he just wants others to believe it, which makes him downright evil. But we knew that. 000
Richard Pomfret @richpomf.bsky.social · 16hWe'd agree about a lot - maybe more than you think. But it's you last sentence that troubles me. Christ himself, as far as we know, never advocated any of those things. 110
Richard Pomfret @richpomf.bsky.social · 16hI'm reading this on a Dell computer and feeling very guilty. 010
Richard Pomfret @richpomf.bsky.social · 17hAll these are Old Testament. The only 'Christianity' I recognise is those who follow Christ's teaching in the 'Sermon on the Mount'. Christ isn't in the Old Testament at all, so all those 'commandments' are not his. Please believe that there are genuine 'good' Christians in existence. 100
Richard Pomfret @richpomf.bsky.social · 08/10/2026Can you enlarge on that? All the genuine Christians I know would be horrified by that statement. 200

Richard Pomfret @richpomf.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Erewhon, and Erewhon Revisited are definitely worth reading. In the latter, the author revisits and finds he's being worshipped as a god - but there are numerous branches of the ensuing religions. 110
Richard Pomfret @richpomf.bsky.social · 04/10/2026The man has shown himself as a total fake. He's changed his speech (and chewing) to appear 'folksy', and in his questioning of Jack Smith made himself look stupid both by the childishness of his questioning (Easter Bunny etc) and by the fact that he got his facts totally wrong. 000
Richard Pomfret @richpomf.bsky.social · 04/10/2026We know. It fell into our laps, totally unexpectedly over 25 years ago. So now we rent it out non-profit, as we can't be there all the time. 010
Richard Pomfret @richpomf.bsky.social · 04/10/2026The cottage is on the Isle of Lismore in Argyll. She's going there next week. I'll join her later. Both happy alone, both happy together. It works well. 110
Richard Pomfret @richpomf.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Sounds like my wife. (Mind you, I love the cottage too, and feel much the same. But we know that.) 120
Richard Pomfret @richpomf.bsky.social · 03/10/2026Can he go up and down stairs, or is he Dalek-disabled? 110
Richard Pomfret @richpomf.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Curry's are usually pretty useless. I've found if I ask about something, they just read the labels to me, as if I couldn't read them myself. Sometimes you can strike lucky and get a member of staff who knows what they're talking about. Sadly, Curry's are not unique. 010
Richard Pomfret @richpomf.bsky.social · 02/10/2026My wife is just under 5ft. I'm about 5ft 10.5in. In ALDI I have to step on the bottom shelf to reach the kind of yoghurts I want, and search through them for the flavours I like. As I'm 80, that might be my ultimate downfall (literally), but how are shorter people, m or f, supposed to cope? 001
Richard Pomfret @richpomf.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Love that picture of Kennedy and Schmitt with their 'Gotcha' faces on, just seconds before they'd be wiped off! 000
Richard Pomfret @richpomf.bsky.social · 01/10/2026Nasty inadequate little man. Totally unsuited for any job I can think of apart from road sweeping or selling cinema tickets. 050
Richard Pomfret @richpomf.bsky.social · 01/10/2026I see the words 'Allister' 'Heath' 'mad' 'nasty' and 'shockingly extreme'. 010
Richard Pomfret @richpomf.bsky.social · 01/10/2026Wasn't so interested in USA politics then, but from here (UK) it seemed as if that election was stolen. Looking back and seeing who was behind it more than confirms my suspicion that Gore won. 010
Richard Pomfret @richpomf.bsky.social · 01/10/2026It's always puzzled me why people wear that kind of cap back-to-front. It doesn't even keep the sun off the back of your neck. 'Fashion' has a lot to answer for, and people are such sheep. 020
Richard Pomfret @richpomf.bsky.social · 01/10/2026She's a perfect example of how deceptive appearances can be. 010
Richard Pomfret @richpomf.bsky.social · 01/10/2026I wonder what sort of terrible music it is that you think snobs like? 000
Richard Pomfret @richpomf.bsky.social · 01/10/2026A particularly obnoxious one. Smug and demeaning. 1140
Richard Pomfret @richpomf.bsky.social · 01/10/2026That's not what 'extol' means. The man's a moron. Probably confusing it with 'exhort'. 000
Richard Pomfret @richpomf.bsky.social · 01/10/2026What a mistake! We all know it's the Untied States. 000
Richard Pomfret @richpomf.bsky.social · 30/09/2026Sorry - I meant 'promenade'. Realised after I'd posted. 010
Richard Pomfret @richpomf.bsky.social · 30/09/2026But which of the pictures was it? Or was it the 'in between' bit, the parade, that keeps recurring in the original? 100
Richard Pomfret @richpomf.bsky.social · 30/09/2026Typical example of (mainly) American destructive linguistic stupidity. Take a perfectly reasonable word or phrase (in this instance a cupboard where you store random things), choose to give it a new meaning, then snigger at anyone who uses it in it's original form. It's almost like teenage bullying. 100
Richard Pomfret @richpomf.bsky.social · 30/09/2026But I love the opportunity to buy cartloads of classical CDs that people have decided are obsolete. I get maybe 200 in a batch from ebay, keep the ones I want and and give the rest (duplicates, 'excerpts from') to a Charity shop. Wins all round. Works out about 50p per CD. 010
Richard Pomfret @richpomf.bsky.social · 28/09/2026Many of us live lives full of music without ever coming across a DJ. 000
Richard Pomfret @richpomf.bsky.social · 28/09/2026Thanks - I don't think it'll find its way into my vocabulary, in that sense anyway. I'll just stick with 'ignored'! 010
Richard Pomfret @richpomf.bsky.social · 28/09/2026My guess is that this is a fairly recent use of the word, and one that's passed me by! I'd tend to think of it as 'having a ghost writer', or a synonym for 'haunted'. 110
Richard Pomfret @richpomf.bsky.social · 28/09/2026He did that 'pointing at someone in the crowd as if he knows them' thing. How are we supposed to interpret that? 000
Reposted by Richard PomfretGary Keenan @gerardpkeenan.bsky.social · 28/09/2026There is too much good music to worry about knowing "hit songs" or to care what anyone thinks about them. One benefit of being old and listening to a lot of music is learning about music itself, its cultural history and amazing varieties. Music is a dynamic practice, not just mass-market hits. 031
Richard Pomfret @richpomf.bsky.social · 28/09/2026Ghosted?? But that's not really a synonym for 'ignored', surely? 110
Richard Pomfret @richpomf.bsky.social · 27/09/2026A year before I left school - remember steam locos having to blow steam on frozen diesels to get them going. Also the most postponed FA Cup football match (Bradford City v Newcastle), not played till mid-March after 13 postponements. And then we lost 1-6. 010
Richard Pomfret @richpomf.bsky.social · 27/09/2026But the shorthand you mention isn't really relevant. LSO stands for London Symphony Orchestra. It's not the 'LS'. And the other example is the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra; a 'Philharmonic' isn't a musical form. I don't mind abbreviations, provided the abbreviation doesn't mean something else. 100
Richard Pomfret @richpomf.bsky.social · 27/09/2026Great that you're enjoying it. But I'm puzzled by the way in USA you use the word 'symphony'. A symphony is a particular kind of musical construction, like a concerto or a suite or a film score. A group of musicians who can play a symphony is a Symphony Orchestra. 100
Richard Pomfret @richpomf.bsky.social · 26/09/2026It's honest to lie. It's kind to be cruel. It's generous to be miserly. Etc, etc. Does Thiel think we can't see through him? 000
Richard Pomfret @richpomf.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Anyone compiling a list of the world's most civilised countries would put one that had virtually universal gun ownership but no universal health care pretty close to the bottom. How did Americans, or anyone else, get the idea that they were nation to be admired? 020

Richard Pomfret @richpomf.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Try singing! You have more direct contact with the music than with any instrument. No financial outlay. You are both the instrument and the carrying case. Meet like-minded music-reading friends - make music any time, anywhere (except where you'd be regarded as a public nuisance!) 010
