In the USA it may be a more common figure of speech than elsewhere, whether for an orchestra (ellipsis) or the overall experience (metonymy). Several orchestras here even omit “orchestra” from their names. I’ve noticed shorthand outside the USA as well, e.g., “the LSO” or “the Liverpool Phil”.
