After 30 great years there, I'll always be a bit of a Londoner, but very happy to be back in the EU, (wondering what the hell is happening to non-London England)

They don't have the capacity to produce much, and will have far less when Ukraine brings their ballistic missiles on line.

In fairness James, she'll be rather happy at finishing ahead of Reform, for the first time in this parliament.

A fifth of leave voters consider themselves liberal yet voted to leave the EU?? I think AI will get self awareness way before those guys.

I think that's right, but I also think it is entirely possible that as part of any accession process Ireland suggests/supports (I wouldn't put it stronger) UK being in Schengen.

I don't believe being left or right matters if, and only if, there is a commitment to the EU project (or at least a commitment not to dismantle it). All parties have said they won't leave the EU (AfD excepted) and all will want the UK's contributions. The EU trancends electoral cycles.

The law is not vindicating rights, it is prosecuting the law. In this case it being illegal to kill. The real question is not only punishment for breaking the law, but also, IMO, to restore societal cohesion.

When one is dead, one is dead. There is nothing to protect. Killing anyone else does nothing for the original victim. It's retrubutive justice which tends to desensetive society to violence.

A stunning and moving piece. It captures effortlessly the agony this political play is reawakening. Congratulations.

Andrew Neil, a person I don't pay much attention to these days, was sobering on BBC Newsnight last night. Sadly I tend to agree with him: any referendum to return will be every bit as divisive as the first and it will take up the entire bandwidth of any government.

RN policy is not to leave the EU nor the €. But it will make Brussels sweat for consensus. The sooner we get QM voting the better.

IMHO FPTP is not democratic. I think we in the EU would be creating a rod for our own back if we take the UK back in with this electoral system. A move of relatively small % of voters could see a Reform government sometime within 20 years. Hopefully Burnham's move to change the system actually does

The EP 2024-29 is made up of 266 seats Centre right and Right, 266 seats Centre left and Left. I have found that MEP returns does not necessarily reflect TD (MP) returns.

...the European social security pass, or right to repair legislation, or global minimum corporate tax directive, or affordable housing initiatives, or farn animal protections, traceability of breeding (cats and dogs), ecodesign directives for product sustainability. "right wing club" ? 🤔

Richard Kavanagh @richkav.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Talking of over simplification... Would a "right wing club" enact the EU's green policies? Or crackdown on greenwashing, or corporate sustainability directive, or AI safeguard act, or fair labour package, or Platform work (gig economy) directive, or pay transparency directive, or ...

View from influencial MEP (Italian, didn't catch his name) on Radio 4 just now is that UK would be like any candidate nation, but since regulatory alignment is still strong and economies similar levels, he'd expect accession to go quickly.

Given his emphasis on a 'Made in Britain' initiative in his speech this morning, I guess Labour has given up trying to be part of the EU's Industrial Accelerator Act

Gave up listening to the Two Matts a while back (ironically, Niall's post might make me check out this ep.) They have slowly moved right. Last time I checked they were at the 'pragmatic Conservative' stage. Sounds like they are now approaching the 'Farage may have a point' stage.

Lol. Get off the fence! But you are correct, a wealth tax, alongside capital gains tax, increased council tax on properties >£1.5, gambling tax, energy windfall taxes will go a long way. But the real game changer is getting back into the EU.

Patrick Freyne in today's Irish Times on RTÉ's The Traitors Ireland. A short sentence with a record number of truisms.
Photo of part of Patric Freyne's piece on The Traitors Ireland. It reads " RTÉ's version is better than the BBC's, because being a colonised people makes you sneaker"

Get yourself a) a Proportional Representation electoral system b) a written constitution which any referendum is advisory and c) >80% want to rejoin (including Schengen and €) and then we can negotiate knowing it is not futile.
100
Richard Kavanagh @richkav.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
Again you don't get it. Why on earth should we negotiate anything that can be turned upside down as a result of a single general election. I get that the slim majority of UK people would like to rejoin. But if Reform are put in that's immaterial and redundant. Why should we take that chance?

You don't get it. FPTP is far too volitile. If rejoining the EU is not wholeheartedly supported by <80% of the UK population, why should we take the chance that at the next election reform get a majority and decide to leave? We don't want shit from a Brexit II again.

Richard Kavanagh @richkav.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
To get back in 52% is way too few. Who in their right mind would allow in a country in that would flounce again out with a 2% switch Other countries have PR, or written constitutions, or media which has not been hijacked The UK is a structural basket case. You need to _prove_ you are trustworthy

Get rid of those red lines, all of them, with the proactive and positive support of 80% of the electorate, and we'll take you seriously.

It's absolutely futile while those red lines are maintained by Burnham, and violently anti EU voter are about 25-30% of the electorate

The greatest trompe d'œil created by Netanyahu is to persuade voters that he is comparatively moderate and that only for him Ben Gvir and Smotrich etc would go nuclear. It's time the Israeli electorate realised Netanyahu is leading them down a path from which there may be no recovery.

I do criticise the Israeli govt. And I blame the Israeli electorate for voting them in time and time again. Don't talk to me about the Russian "electorate". Their cowardice has handed their country to a kleptocratic dictator.
