There's two kinds of social media: the broadcast/platform kind (blogs, Youtube); and the forum kind (forums, Reddit). Broadcast has one person speak to many, and comments - if they exist - are all about reacting to the post or video. With forums, someone might post something, but that's only […]

Coding agents reduce software development to a simple matter of: * specifying requirements * verifying correctness and quality * maintaining and operating software you didn't write As we all know, those have always been the easiest, most well-understood parts of the craft, so everything is fine!

So there's a frustrating thing with your native language: you speak it, but you don't *know* it. With my other languages I'll often know the rule, or pattern, or origin, or principle behind a language construct. Because I had to learn it to learn the language. But with my native language it's […]

Open Source hot take: A software project is allowed to be *done*. Not everything needs to add features or rewrite things. You can just be happy with functionality and focus on just maintainance. "Maintenance mode" is not always bad but can just show a mature product.

I think a lot of students—and unfortunately a lot of adults—think that what you learn in a degree is the _content_ of the degree, but really what you are studying is the _process_. Knowing what's in Canterbury Tales won't come up in your day to day life. As a rule no one is going to ask you to […]

I was today years old when I realized that "自鯖" ("jisaba" - "self-mackerel") is slang for "自宅サーバー", "home server". I can conveniently blame my age for not understanding what the young'uns are talking about these days. Now excuse me while I adjust the onion hanging from my belt.
