Yes. Tho’ from what he said on the Today programme he agreed with the headline of the motion ie ‘Zionism is Racism’. So he wasn’t ‘against’ the principle of the motion he just thought the GPEW shouldn’t be prescribing a one state solution to the Palestinians.

I read the whole of ´The Right Way’, Badenoch’s foundational blueprint for the next 50 years. If any politico can look in a mirror and honestly say ‘I read all of it’, I’d love to hear your views.

Agree the Badenoch this morning was pure Bird and Forune

Agree re both the childcare and £100k tax ´trap’, they are a thing for those who already believe they pay their fair share in taxes.

So what conditions would have to exist for your ´nothing racist about any ethnic or religious group wanting their own homeland’ to be possible in the real world?
010
Richard Schofield @richardschofield.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Yes, tho’ if you can bear it please read the full resolution as it pretty explicitly treats both the same ie ´any form of Zionism is Racism’ and amendments attempting to temper it were defeated.

Richard Schofield @richardschofield.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
I’ve resigned from the Green Party and hope others will too. This motion - and please read all of it - is immoral, politically illiterate and will only make legitimate debate about Israel’s conduct harder.

Richard Schofield @richardschofield.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
It does tho’ let’s see. Not having a strategy may be a completely inadvertent masterstroke if Labour self-identify as ´let’s undo Thatcherism’ etc and Re… become even more odious the no-woman’s land she is currently in is the front-line by ´28.

No, under AV voters rank candidates 1-7 or whatever. When the votes are counted the candidate with least votes drops out and their second preferences are distributed and so on until one candidate gets to 50%+. It’s just another way to get a single candidate to 50%, not proportional
020
Richard Schofield @richardschofield.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Supplementary vote, it’s not a proportional system - the voter just gives their first and second preference. It was used in mayoral elections, stopped by the Conservatives and is being reintroduced by Labour. It’s generally considered a fudge between FPTP and a genuinely proportional system

Well it does sort of depend on how you invest the borrowing.

I’m a bit confused by all the fuss TBH. My kids have variously done subjects like art, digital photography, design technology, textiles etc as well as the core ‘academic’ subjects. So why is say ‘car maintenance’ or whatever getting everyone so excited?

As someone who’s just left NHS England I think ‘enough thought’ is very generous of you.

Richard Schofield @richardschofield.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
It is a good piece. Unfortunately the data that is available is so complex it is hard to demonstrate that the ‘Gove Settlement’ is causative and which bits have had most impact - curriculum, freedom, assessment methods? And many parts of England are likely not doing any better than Wales?
000
Richard Schofield @richardschofield.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
Yes, though Estonia also has a ‘split’ system and did better than us, so it may be a bit more complex than that. The difference is in Germany the split starts at about 10 (early in the language learning journey for immigrant kids), in Estonia it’s 15

I always wonder when we have the words ‘academic’ or ‘press’ before the word freedom as the catch-all defence, how would we judge the behaviour concerned if ‘academic’ or ‘press’ weren’t there?

Richard Schofield @richardschofield.bsky.social · 22/08/2026
The King of the North needs to sort out the ECB. No Ashes test north of Nottingham in 2027! Including no game at Headingly, the only ground England always win at…failure to read the room AND self-harm.
000
Richard Schofield @richardschofield.bsky.social · 18/08/2026
Yep. Very well put. Many of these supposed dichotomies are false, and would be seen as so in many countries where devolved government has been entrenched for decades. Not sure why we have such a fear of it all?
030
Richard Schofield @richardschofield.bsky.social · 18/08/2026
Yes. Though why is that different to national governments of different political hues? I struggle with the idea that somehow devo creates new problems of political/policy principle, though I also think I must be genuinely missing something
010
Richard Schofield @richardschofield.bsky.social · 18/08/2026
I get this argument, I suppose though ‘Britain needs more social housing’ has been an issue for 40 years. No national govt has come close to solving it. Devo (with the right financial rules) may a) be more likely to deliver; and b) allow no 10 to say ‘well that’s been delegated so blame your Mayor’

They could always dig out the ‘Orange Book’

Richard Schofield @richardschofield.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
Because the system of ‘regulation’ was designed that way, as numerous policy academics (including me and most importantly Jean Shaoul at Manchester Business School) predicted at the time.

Richard Schofield @richardschofield.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
agree with you and @duncanweldon.bsky.social question is whether devolution really is a better way of generating regional growth. If it is then the debate about education reform becomes about sequencing rather than principle. I’d go for devolution and solve the problems, rather than be deterred

Richard Schofield @richardschofield.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
Not sure Polly Toynbee’s idea of telling people they are ‘ignorant and ungrateful’ is quite the right comms strategy for Burnham though!
000
Richard Schofield @richardschofield.bsky.social · 27/07/2026
All this just shows the ‘left’ is not a thing really. The obsession with property ownership as the single shibboleth of left purity has wasted about 150 years with Life of Brian levels of factionalism.

Agree with all of this except your tone about Timpson. He had a commitment to and involvement in prison reform long before becoming a minister, and is genuinely respected. Not sure who your sources were for the ‘ineffective’ jibe but I doubt it was anyone with any real insight.

I would describe myself as an ideological centrist, and on the Overton window have been utterly amazed and frustrated at how many of my ‘ideological’ friends, left and right, have shifted their positions so easily. If anything centrism feels more distinct than when I was younger.

TBF I don’t think the comments are about whether it ‘plays well’ or is right - it will and it is. I think the comments were more about the expectation that on his first day as the ‘cost of living’ PM his first major pledge didn’t relate to cost of living
000
Richard Schofield @richardschofield.bsky.social · 20/07/2026
Everyone wants to ‘end rough sleeping’ but really weird choice of Burnham today: a Not a specific cost of living pledge b Not a big pledge in the great scheme (however worthy), not ambitious c Weirdly dissonant with his devolution schtick. Rough sleeping will be solved locally

Richard Schofield @richardschofield.bsky.social · 20/07/2026
I agree, the concern is that I’m not sure Burnham has quite decided whether he wants to challenge the HMT orthodoxy or not (right or wrong). ‘Powerful’ chancellors are vital to deliver big policy change, but you have to know what the big policy changes are first.

Yes, excellent. In the end tho Tuchel chose a strange squad (why no Wharton?) and asked us to trust he a) was a tactical genius; and b) could instil new belief in the players. For a) we ended up with Big Sam stuff and for b) he showed he didn’t really believe in his own team
010
Richard Schofield @richardschofield.bsky.social · 13/07/2026
Well then let’s all leave them to it…please…the liberal tendency to say ‘well there are some good arguments against which we should face’ is 1) at best pointless because they don’t care; and 2) leads over time to oh I don’t know stuff like Brexit
000
Richard Schofield @richardschofield.bsky.social · 11/07/2026
Oh yes I agree with your thrust, more a technical question
