The 5,500 year-old Neolithic Pentre Irfan Burial Chamber in Pembrokeshire, Wales. The chamber, constructed ca 3,500 BCE to 3,000 BCE, is constructed of local bluestone which was also used at Stonehenge. It also has a capstone that weighs 16 tons! There was a class of art students at the site today.😊

The RNLI is a charity that rely on brave volunteers & public donations. Its members have been saving lives since 1824. Over the last few years people have withdrawn their financial support & haters have now resorted to bullying, intimidating & doxxing volunteers. RNLI needs our help more than ever.

Aigeira was a powerful city in Classical times and there is a wonderful 3rd century BCE theatre that still exists. The famous sanctuary of Delphi is on the other side of the gulf. 📹&📷 me. Apologies for the awful photo. The Classical site was closed and I took the photo through a fence in poor light.

19 August 1909: Little Red Song Book published
On this day, 19 August 1909, the first edition of the revolutionary Industrial Workers of the World union’s Little Red Songbook was published in the US. Spreading faster than many radical texts, these songs were sung by thousands on picket lines across the country in the coming years, including perhaps the most famous, 'Solidarity Forever', written by Ralph Chaplin during a miners' strike in West Virginia in 1912. It also included numerous songs by Joe Hill, the Swedish immigrant IWW activist who was executed by the state of Utah in 1915. We have made available this book in our online store compiling loads of IWW songs. Many people fail to recognise that there is good and bad everywhere. Placing people in categories and giving them the same characteristics because they are of the same religion or group is both hateful and intolerant. The very thing they say they despise.

The Lechaion Road in Ancient Corinth, Greece, dates back to at least 600 BCE and likely followed the route of an older dirt path. It was originally 3 km (1.9 miles) long and ran from Corinth’s port of Lechaion to the city’s Agora/Forum. The road was paved by the Romans in the 1st century CE. 📷 me.

A Roman military diploma was an official copy of an imperial decree issued in Rome. It served as permanent, physical proof that a non-citizen auxiliary soldier or sailor had completed their service and been granted honourable discharge and Roman citizenship.
This is a close-up of the right-hand leaf of the Lanchester Diploma. The name Tigernos is inscribed at the start of the fourth line up from the bottom:
‘Velvotigerno Magiοtigerni f(ilio) Brit(toni)’ / ‘Velvotigernus son of Magiotigernus, a Briton’

Meet Tigernos, one of Britain’s earliest named sailors! ⚓️ A Briton and Roman fleet veteran, his story is recorded on the bronze Lanchester Diploma issued by Antoninus Pius in AD 150. It grants him honourable discharge from the Classis Germanica and Roman citizenship. #EpigraphyTuesday #Archaeology
My photo shows the Lanchester Diploma, a rare Roman bronze military diploma on display at Durham Archaeological Museum. The diploma originally consisted of two bronze leaves, each of which has broken into four quarters, making eight fragments. Latin inscriptions can be seen on each fragment. The fragments are green-patinated with age and are mounted on clear acrylic supports. The diploma was issued on 19 November 150 AD by emperor Antoninus Pius and awarded to a Briton named Tigernos who had served in the Roman German fleet known as the Classis Germanicus, probably for a period of 26 years. It records that he was granted an honourable discharge and Roman citizenship on his retirement. It was found by a metal detectorist in 2016 near the Roman fort of Longovicium in Lanchester, County Durham.

Is it because they light up our imaginations about a time so far back we can hardly comprehend? Just recently bought these from a fossil seller. They’re from Whitby and 180 million years old!😮🤯
