Research students: Government guarantee of minimum wage would be nice? Edu Minister @jasonclaremp.bsky.social: Nah. Universities can pay that if they want. Unis: We’re sacking researchers & defunding our research scholarship programs. What a “system”! Below-minimum wage = below-minimum research

Another Budget week gone &, overall, I'd say Australian research is worse off than last week. Maybe medical research is a bit better off. CSIRO's on slightly firmer footing ("but we'll sack everyone anyway"). University-based research? "Research translation"? Stuffed. No $. No plan. No research.

Nothing in the Budget last night for the ARC. Despite review after review recommending ARC funding be increased, nothing. Year on year, the same thing, no matter who's in Government.

Reviews don't fund research. If, like me, you hope for more research funding in tomorrow's Budget, here's a cold shower from a Minister responsible for Australia's currently shambolic R&D system, Tim Ayres 👇 'We hear your concerns' 'We did a review' But…nothing else. A script from The Hollowmen.
