Nuit Blanche, motherfucker.
Toronto’s City Hall, at night, seen from the back after having gone up the ramp. It looks like a flying saucer landed and tried to play it cool by making it seem like it was supposed to be there. An illuminated balloon in the middle of Toronto’s Nathan Phillips Square, at night, with buildings in the background.

I recommend that all Canadians read the Charter of Rights and Freedoms on a yearly basis. It’s brief! It almost, but not quite, fits in the palm of my hand.

Mmm, classy.
A still from The Simpsons, with tobacco company executives proposing to Lisa Simpson (wearing a crown, which she had won as Little Miss Springfield, and which had been partially melted in a lightning strike [not while she was wearing it, at least]), an advertisement campaign where she, a little girl, is praying at her bedside, smoking a cigarette, and the text reads "God Bless Mommy and Daddy and Laramie Cigarettes".

I wondered the same thing as I crossed the Puente de Luz bridge today.
The CN Tower, the top of which is not visible because of fog, leading one with little evidence that it’s in fact there, causing panic due to the possibility that it may have in fact toppled over. Visible in the foreground are rail tracks, and the CN Tower (or what's remaining of it) is framed by high-rise buildings.

I know I know I know, it’s way harder, but we need to post more photos of what it looks like from inside the vehicle. It’s far, far more compelling to show what it looks like from the inside. In May, I was on a bus from the Montréal airport to downtown and this was my view. Just awful.
A photo of Montréal from the inside of a bus with outside wrapping, preventing an actual view of the city. It looks like yellow and blue dots instead of the first impression of a Canadian city that might he the first impression for people.

Post a perfect album from 1989, a perfect music year.
The album cover for The Beastie Boys’ Paul’s Boutique. From Wikipedia: “The album is named after a store the group made up called Paul's Boutique. On the cover of the album, the group hung a sign saying ’Paul's Boutique’ on an existing clothing store called Lee’s Sportswear at the corner of Rivington and Ludlow streets, in Manhattan's Lower East Side.”

There’s one like this at Augusta Ave. and Paul Ln Gardens (you can sort of see it in the very middle of this Google Street View of it). I (jokingly) thought it was for kids and kids only, but there’s gotta be some other, better explanation for it. If you go to the link you can zoom in more.

If he’s referring to The Bygone Bureau then, for the record, I loved The Bygone Bureau. thereportedessay.substack.com/p/the-featur...
How did you start getting into this? As a writer first who liked longform? Or did you start with editing?

In a sense I was lucky to grow up in a house where my parents read a lot, which I don't think is a super-common experience for many kids of immigrants. My parents were good readers. They were mostly reading genre stuff. My dad's favorite author is Michael Connelly, who is actually an ex-journalist. But we didn't really get magazines. I was not reading New Yorker features as a kid. It was around college where I had scammed my way into a bunch of cheap magazine subscriptions that I started engaging with that a bit more. And then I ran a very mediocre literary blog for several years and we ran a lot of essays. That's how I learned to edit, at least at a base level.

If you see this, quote with a robot that isn’t from Star Wars or Transformers 🤖
Bender from Futurama, having just been thrown out of a theme park, and is lying down on a desolate planet, and who then says: “Yeah? Well, I’m gonna go build my own theme park, with blackjack and hookers. In fact, forget the park.”

Projection of a Liberal government by CBC TV without knowing whether it would be a minority or majority government, the former being dependent on whether they, the Liberal Party of Canada, could command the confidence of the House of Commons.

I was just on my first flight on Delta Air Lines since learning about the trading cards, so I got one from the pilot as I deplaned. I talked to the flight attendant about it as I was boarding, and she assured me that I didn’t have to be a kid to ask for one.

In my mind, there’s a Commonwealth Day ceremony at Victoria Memorial Square (originally named Victoria Square to honour the then-Princess Victoria, and it wasn’t even named that to begin with, and which flies a Union Jack year-round). I always have to work that day, so every year, I just imagine it.
