Energy engineer working in renewable energy Based in Switzerland / Italy / Japan

Today this shift is even more urgent, as in addition to addressing climate change, renewables also increase energy independence and security. In a time when not only Russia but also the United States can blackmail Europe by blocking gas deliveries, the energy transition needs to happen fast

A group of ten local residents climbed 800 meters above the city and lit 450 torches to form the message: "No Kings." This is how Davos welcomed Trump.

It's not even close, China has 4 times the wind power capacity of the US en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wind_po...

That doesn't sound that big considering the potential gains. Time saving with AI coding agents (when used correctly) is probably higher than the time saved by running a dishwasher vs washing by hand

Actually, fun fact: in Italy bidets are mandatory by law in at least one bathroom in each household

Bluesky is based on atproto, which is an open standard. An atproto server can be based in the EU and be completely independent of the US or "Bluesky" the company, and still be accessible and access everything on Bluesky

I agree that we have to target US big tech. Get rid of “anti-circumvention” laws and allow for domestic alternatives to grow (and subsidise them). Dependency on the US is an existential threat.

Europe must now tell Trump that enough is enough – and cut all ties with the US | Alexander Hurst
How do you retain a space of democracy in a world that is reverting to violent conquest? By building a protective moat of federalism around it, says Paris-based Guardian writer Alexander Hurst

It's funny because that's what the second amendment is supposed to be for, according to republicans. It would be interesting to see what happens if people start taking this bullshit seriously

What's the source of wealth? Human capital, institutions, knowledge. You can convince yourself that this matters more simply by looking at your laptop, which is largely made of cheap stuff, along with a tiny bit of gold, neodymium, etc. The value is in the pattern and the ability to construct it.

Unhook ourselves from oil and gas and we unhook ourselves from dependency on dictators, autocrats and expansionist regimes all over the planet. Renewables and other low-carbon energy sources are not just good climate sense. They are also good political sense.

"In normal liberal democracy terms, the US is in bad shape. But in consolidated authoritarianism terms, we’re doing pretty well." I wrote about the weirdness of walking around the monuments in DC, three ways the Trump regime stumbled this year, and why I'm cautiously optimistic heading into 2026.

Washington DC is Messed Up, But the Regime is Failing
America is no longer a constitutional democracy yet is far from consolidated authoritarianism. It's important to recognize both of those at once.

Silicon Valley’s alliance with Donald Trump was a mask off moment and showed the world we can’t depend on US tech companies. For the past few months, I’ve been trying to get off US tech and I put together a guide so you find alternatives too. I hope you find it helpful!

Madness to outsource the entire transport system to a monopolistic mega corporation that would know your every move. The real and only solution to transportation is public transport, cycling, and walking, and an urban form that promotes these modes

1. The European Parliament’s attempt to ban plant-based foods from being sold as “sausages”, “burgers” etc is a direct response to livestock industry lobbying. This is a short thread on how utterly bleeding ridiculous it is. 🧵1/6

Hey @nature.com, have you got an explanation for how the hell THIS happened? & especially why you accepted a paper with such a bizarre piece of genAI slop in it?! & more to the point, why we should take you seriously at all going forward? www.nature.com/articles/s41...
Figure 1 from a paper published in Nature (linked in post). The figure purports to be an infographic depiction of the "Overall working of the framework" for 'explainably' diagnosing autism spectrum disorder. The infographic is plainly nonsense, containing many spelling errors, nonsense words, meaningless images and graphs. Clearly created using generative AI and (crucially) NEVER CHECKED AT ANY STEP OF THE WRITING OR PUBLICATION PROCESS.

In a way, it's different from other bubbles: the companies creating it essentially own the US government, so they can just keep it alive for as long as they want with public money. In that sense, the bubble may well not deflate ever, and just keep pumping public money into billionaires' pockets
