🧵 Exciting news for me, but mixed news for lovers: I have a new day job! It’s a great fit for me and I’m feeling optimistic about it, but the hours mean I can no longer tour Aotearoa as often as I had planned. Tours are cancelled for 2026 while I settle into my new role.

In his lavish and larger-than-life images of young African American adults, Kehinde Wiley reframes Old Master paintings for contemporary times. This portrait of Willem van Heythuysen references a 1625 painting of a Dutch merchant by Frans Hals, widely considered one of the most iconic works of the early to mid-17th century Dutch Golden Age. In Wiley's painting, the model, who hails from Harlem, New York, mimics the aristocratic, classicising pose of the original sitter from Haarlem in the Netherlands. The subject's stylish Sean John streetwear and Timberland boots keep him firmly in the present and in urban America, despite the classical splendor of the painting's wide gold frame and the vibrantly patterned background with Indian-inspired tendrils encircling the subject's body. Emphasising diverse geographies, cultures and times, Wiley's paintings draw attention to the historical exclusion of people of colour in the Western tradition of classical portraiture. They also bring dignity to those often unconsidered by elevating them to a level of opulent visibility.
