There's a gap growing in the fortunes of Japan's anime studios, @mattschley.com writes. A く (ku) shaped economy, he calls it. An excellent metaphor. I'm quoted a couple times in this excellent article with my thoughts on some of the financial pressures that anime studios face.

As I expected and reported after the acquisition by Media Do earlier this year, Seven Seas is expanding beyond manga and light novels and moving into trade fiction.
Between the lines: Media Do “will not use AI in the translation operations of Seven Seas”, it said in a statement but plans to integrate Seven Seas production know-how into Media Do Translation System (MDTS), an AI-powered workflow it’s developing for digital translation of Japanese literature. Media Do sees text-based publications, which is translated into other languages at one-fourth the rate of manga, as a future area of growth for its new overseas business. Only 40 percent of text-based works in Japan are published as e-books when they are first released, and MDTS is intended to push domestic publishers to bring more non-manga e-books to the market for Media Do to distribute.

Makoto Tezuka, Osamu Tezuka's heir, has a new interview in Japanese media outlet Business+IT that discusses the parallels between The Lion King and Kimba the White Lion, including alleging that NBC (which syndicated Kimba) orchestrated the accusations of copyright infringement against Disney.
Interviewer: So, I wanted to ask you this: When Disney released the animated film "The Lion King" in 1995, there was a controversy over its striking similarity to Osamu Tezuka's "Kimba the White Lion." It was a case that could have led to a lawsuit, so what were your feelings at the time?

Tezuka: At the time, both NBC and BBC came to interview us.

Initially, when I looked at the domestic media, there were many reports that portrayed it as a heartwarming story, saying that "Tezuka's work, which had been influenced by Walt Disney, was finally being imitated by Disney," but when I looked outside, each media outlet had a different tone in dealing with this story.

For example, the BBC in the UK was calm, but it seemed to me that NBC in the US just wanted to attack Disney's new CEO at the time, and was using the striking similarity between "The Lion King" and "Kimba the White Lion" as material to do so. I think that this kind of reporting gradually spread, fueled by NBC's intentions, but from my perspective, I considered the two works to be separate from the others from that time onward.

I defined "Kimba the White Lion" as having two copyrights. One is the story of animals and humans cooperating, and the second is the character setting of a white lion. I thought that this was where the originality lay.

People around me said that other than those parts, for example, that "the animals' posing is similar, isn't that the problem?", but I calmly thought about it, saying things like, "Tezuka took this from the composition of (Disney's) Bambi."

In the end, when I compared it to what I consider to be copyright, there is no interaction between animals and humans in The Lion King, and there is no white lion. The important parts were not copied, so I judged that it was fine.

Quote from a Teen Vogue article about the gay hockey drama Heated Rivalry:

Goldstein-Couto, in particular, understood the unexpected target audience for gay male romance. “These are books written by women, consumed largely by women,” Tierney says. “I always said, ‘Once you film this, gay men will watch it, but we’ll watch anything with gay men in it. We’re not wildly discerning in that way, and we’re starved for stories. But the secret fan base of this is women, and that is a much bigger target than just queer people or queer men, or whatever the assumption was.’”

This whole misunderstanding is unfortunately caused by anime fans' tendency to fixate on the "studio" as the defining aspect of an anime production. It speaks to a lack of awareness that the western definition of "studio" doesn't correlate to how the anime industry works and thinks about studios.

I watched the 1954 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea film and ended up reading fascinating details about the origins of Captain Nemo's character in Verne's books and how early English language translations of Jules Verne's works butchered them. www.verniana.org/volumes/02/A...
Two paragraphs from Perschon's paper about Captain Nemo's identity:
"Nemo’s little known Indian heritage, and even less known revolutionary involvement in the Sepoy Rebellion of 1857, amounts to the literary equivalent of a political conspiracy, beginning with Verne’s first imaginings of the character. It has been well documented how Hetzel refused Verne’s first iteration of Nemo, given France’s political ties with Russia:
“[Verne’s] first draft was influenced by the 1863 Polish uprising against Tsarist Russia. Poland was quashed with a bestial savagery that appalled not just Verne but all Europe. As first conceived, the novel’s protagonist, Captain Nemo, was a Polish aristocrat whose parents, wife, and children were brutally slaughtered by Russian troops.” (Miller xvi)
Verne acquiesced to Hetzel’s suggestion, by leaving “the identity of Nemo and of his great oppressor as something of a mystery, at least in 20,000 Leagues” (xvi). But Hetzel’s censoring only delayed Verne’s intent for Nemo’s origins. By the time Verne wrote The Mysterious Island, he was positioned to refuse any censorship, and able to present an arguably more radical genesis for the Captain, as the leader of infamous Sepoy Rebellion, the Indian Mutiny of 1857: “Indian in his heart, Indian in his longing for revenge, Indian in his dreams of reclaiming his native land, driving out the invaders, and inaugurating a new era of independence” (Island 584-85)."A paragraph from Perschon's paper about Nemo's identity:
"Nemo has been portrayed as an Indian only three times, and played by an Indian only once, by Naseeruddin Shah in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (LXG). The identity of Nemo as Indian outside Europe remains to this day largely unknown, so that one reviewer of LXG commented: “I didn't even know [Nemo] was Indian in the books; I thought the choice of Shah was innovative casting” (Heroine Content). It might be assumed that Walt Disney is largely responsible for the accidental Occidentalizing of Nemo, given the popularity of Disney’s film version in 1954. However, even the earlier audiences of the 1916 version of 20,000 Leagues were told that Nemo’s Indian heritage as seen in the film was not of Verne’s invention, with reviewers assuming “it was the invention of the filmmakers” (Taves 209). Even so, the blame for the cover-up cannot be laid solely at the feet of Richard Fleischer, Stuart Paton, or any other film director. Instead, we must look earlier, to the first English translations of The Mysterious Island. Miller and Walter identify culprit of the greatest translation misrepresentation of Nemo as “British boys’ author,” W.H.G. Kingston:
“Unfortunately, Kingston’s rendering of Nemo’s biography is not at all faithful to Verne: the Englishman rewrites, cuts, and just plain fabricates, all in an effort to bring this crucial passage into line with the official British propaganda of his day” (389)."
