Andrew King @rewrking.bsky.social · 07/10/2026I suppose that's true. You'd never use a pointer to std::string anyway (why would you?) ... it feels criminal, but I'll try it out. 000
Andrew King @rewrking.bsky.social · 07/10/2026std::string doesn't have a virtual destructor, so you can't safely inherit from it. 100

Andrew King @rewrking.bsky.social · 30/09/2026Images of the short-lived ABC TGIF show "Aliens in the Family" has been buried deep in my brain cavities for 30 years. Apparently it only had 8 episodes. Now you too know it exists. 100

Andrew King @rewrking.bsky.social · 17/09/2026Last night, I got the projection matrix (and 3D) "working" in my software renderer... but.... at what... cost? 010
Andrew King @rewrking.bsky.social · 14/09/2026A year ago or so I started adding a software renderer to my engine because well... I was curious, and I wanted to go through that awesome tinyrenderer guide. There's no good reason to work on this, but I did it anyway, and now it's more or less reached parity with my GL renderer (but god is it slow) 110

Andrew King @rewrking.bsky.social · 27/08/2026Was surprised that game engines basically give you 4-5 presets, and tell you to use a custom function if you want something more complicated, but having looked at a lot of the permutations, I get it now. Most are junk or probably only useful in certain alpha blending situations. 000
Andrew King @rewrking.bsky.social · 27/08/2026I wanted to see how many Photoshop blend modes were possible using glBlendFunc + glBlendEquation (as well as SDL_ComposeCustomBlendMode), and as far as I can tell, the answer is 12 (-ish - would require a blog post). Also used the duck from the W3C CSS draft for funsies. 210

I'm still building out some ideas for it, but the movement and collision feel really fluid so far. The art reads from .aseprite files, and supports palette swapping. It's challenging, but really satisfying to see a lot of color combinations easily. 111

Andrew King @rewrking.bsky.social · 13/08/2026This tiny music player is the result of a ton of audio (and font) programming. I needed a way to quickly test audio formats, and metadata reading, so it made sense to build this out. It even reads m3u files, and 24-bit audio (although I can't hear the difference between it and 16-bit). 100
