Missed this while I was taking a break from bsky! So hype!! I feel almost spoiled seeing the completed torii lol

南蛮 @reversethunder.bsky.social · 24/08/2026

It was also less sexist than I expected. Everyone had a fair amount of agency throughout the whole affair. 0% damsels detected

Maltese Falcon was a good read. Another piece of media I feel "late" to given its obvious influence on all my favorite neo-noirs (DADoES/BR, Sprawl Trilogy, The Big Lebowski)

Unnecessary loss of life; and on top of that, they refused assistance.

I left too soon after to inevitably hear him perform any damage control.

He told us with total confidence that Midnight Hammer and border operations were quick wins on the road to INDOPACOM focus. Sadly I PCSed soon after and never got to hear his mea culpa

My prev CO, fresh from Pentagon staff, said if you wanna know what's gonna happen next, look at what Colby says. That was July 2025. Honestly kind of hilarious how bad that advice would turn out to be

Enjoy this pic of a special Junji Ito exhibit I attended in 2024

Looks like Junji Ito is the newest addition to the "Torment Nexus" literary universe

I think a lot about how technological innovation in the late 90s became focused on profit, and what they might looks like if it wasn't so closely tied to capitalism.

I plan to repent by buying a used bookstore copy

000

南蛮 @reversethunder.bsky.social · 06/08/2026

I bought a copy of The Maltese Falcon on Kindle not knowing it bad these God awful AI "illustrations". I have never regretted a 99¢ purchase more than I do now.

The FBI involvement is largely for crimes he committed in the US, including trafficking from the Philippines. His organization still poses a threat to major West Coast Fil-Am communities

If Ghost Fleet had been published 10 years later we could've had this ship instead of the Zumwalt

020

南蛮 @reversethunder.bsky.social · 05/08/2026

The only logical outcome I can predict for this ship is it will be used in a scenario straight out of Metal Wolf Chaos

I had a really long and nice chat with @sarahathwaites.bsky.social about TANUKI! Always an utter privilege and kick to have work be covered by a national newspaper back home 😊 (Also @jacobwmills.bsky.social namedropped)

Voting in local elections is actually really fun. I forget how fun it is every 2 years. I love analyzing candidates

It's an English loanword as far as I'm concerned. There's not really an English equivalent that feels right

My buddy working construction in the middle east would always complain about contractors saying "we'll finish on time inshallah." He'd reply "no, not God willing, ME willing! Charles Willing!"

It's nice to read a book about a guy who loves his wife. Surprisingly few of those in my library now that I think about it.

Wish I could find a source. We read through it in OCS as a case study.

I pray that other Americans who also deal in actual foreign exchange, esp at lower levels, do it from a place of "we want to help you achieve sovereignty." It's on the junior officers and diplomatic staff to keep that ideal from being corrupted.

One chapter with him in Old Man's War and Master Sergeant Ruiz is already in the running for one of the greatest fictional basic training instructors ever. Reminds me a lot of my OCS Drill Instructors, who knew we weren't kids and needed some breaking down.

Yesterday I sent a long thoughtful email to a friend's son with advice for his internship. He replied with an AI regurgitation of what I said. It made me wonder how long it'll be before the high quality info from human thought is totally filtered out. Apparently, not long.

Typical behavior from a Japanese boss who still thinks it's the early 90s and they can re-inflate the bubble.

For real though I think No Country For Old Men was a more balanced exploration of the different perspectives in Blood Meridian and other westerns

000

南蛮 @reversethunder.bsky.social · 21/07/2026

In the end Trigun was a better exploration of the same themes.

I liked the kid, and I cared about him, but I didn't become extremely invested in him. Also I'm not surprised people stupidly argue about what happened to him, like it even matters.

It was very interesting to immerse myself in 1840s southwest America. Undeniably an awful time that I would not want to experience.

100

南蛮 @reversethunder.bsky.social · 21/07/2026

Finished Blood Meridian so before my thoughts are influenced by any other discourse I will say, I enjoyed it and found it very interesting. I certainly do not understand its viral appeal or why it's considered so incredible.

南蛮 @reversethunder.bsky.social · 20/07/2026

I remember enjoying Nancy Farmer books around that age and lexile score. House of the Scorpion; The Ear, the Eye and the Arm specifically.

000

南蛮 @reversethunder.bsky.social · 20/07/2026

Reading Blood Meridian bc I wanted to read a western. Remember seeing this quote out of context a few yrs ago and thinking it was profound. Now feeling profoundly stupid for giving any merit to a sadistic pedophile sociopath

"It makes no difference what men think of war, said the judge. War is inevitable. As well ask men what they think of stone. War was always here. Before man was, war waited for him. The ultimate trade awaiting its ultimate practitioner. That is the way it has been and will be. That way and not some other way." Blood Meridian by Cormack McCarthy

Well the boss fight definitely, overall theme maybe.
