I can't help but think all beavers feel this way in regards to human activities. They had 7 million years of peaceful existence...then these mentally ill primates show up...

Some exemplary #beaverart. I followed a beaver trail through a dense thicket and emerged here in this little flooded opening surrounding this large ash tree. Tooth on ash wood. Anonymous

One of the big take-aways from my field research has been how much beaver contribute to structural diversity in their habitat, and how important that complexity is to their survival. Old trees, young trees, chewed trees, windblown trees! Impenetrable beaver thickets! Wide open ponds!

I went down the beaver evolution rodent hole, and there is something I need you to know: Beavers, in their present size, form, & behavior evolved 7 MILLION years ago, in the Miocene. That is how long they have been enriching ecosystems. Homo Sapiens were not even a twinkle in evolution's eye.

The science is in on salmon populations. They need free flowing rivers, connected, healthy tributaries for raising young, and good water quality with varied flows. They need beavers. The only thing that needs to die in this situation is a violent resource management strategy that ignores ecology.

I am constantly in awe of beaver's highly selective methods of tree chewing. In just this small area we can see a cottonwood that has been repeatedly debarked and healed, but never cut, a mature ash that is heavily debarked, & two smaller ash in various stages of felling. How do beavs plan & decide?

Hey #ecology and #wildlifephotography! I'm wondering what waterproof camera set ups you use to take good wetland photos? My phone camera is not cutting it, but I've taken enough slides into deep wetland goo to not feel comfortable taking a DSLR into that environment. Tips?

Some part of me feels a little guilty studying beaver habitat. Like a nosy neighbor. Squishing through wetlands and ducking into the willow understory they like to hang out in feels strangely intimate. I spy on where they ate breakfast. What they chewed last night. Where they stood and sniffed...

Of all the pseudoromantic colonial nostalgia bullshit... A beaver wetland is representative of persistent historical conditions before trapping and agiculture decimated that landscape. N America had an est. 400 million beaver before settlers drained the wetlands and killed all the beaver.

You wouldn't know it from the road, but hidden in the riparian tangle below lies a peaceful beaver complex. Water collects & quietly trickles over the far edge of a dam. A canopy of willows flower overhead. Nettles & native bulbs emerge along the shore & bushtits peep in the brush. 🦫build habitat!
