Result #3: Which policy rule copes best with asymmetric hysteresis? Rules responding to unemployment or price-level targeting do better, because they lean harder against the recessions that do the permanent damage. Robust to adding the ELB. www.restud.com/monetary-pol... 5/5

Result #2: Asymmetric hysteresis costs are permanent, not infrequent and short-lived. Under endogenous growth the welfare costs of deviating from the optimal inflation target are much larger than in traditional NK models, pushing the optimal inflation target above 2%. 4/5

Result #1: Price distortions and asymmetric hysteresis deliver a non-vertical long-run Phillips curve, capturing the long-run trade-off between inflation and output growth. Monetary policy invariance hypothesis fails. 3/5

Mechanism: The interaction of endogenous growth & DNWR gives rise to asymmetric hysteresis and amplifications effects. When nominal wages bind, profits/R&D down → productivity growth falls → wage floor binds even harder next period. A self-reinforcing loop. 2/5

Standard NK models find optimal inflation well below 2%, small welfare losses from business cycles and monetary policy is neutral in the long run. In a new paper, @mirkoabbritti, @egostino and Weber show all three conclusions break with endogenous growth & DNWR. 1/5
