If you aren’t familiar with the Whitney. Most plantations center the experience and lives of the enslavers. The art, architecture, and lives of the wealthy white folks. The Whitney centers the lives and experience of the enslaved laborers. And. Wow. It’s powerful.

According to the Innocence Project, since 1989 there have been 375 DNA exonerations. Cases where later DNA testing has proven that it was not possible for the convicted person to have committed the crime. Those innocent individuals spent an average of 14 years in prison.

One of the things I love most about this congregation, is that they trust me to preach "risky" sermons -- sermons that challenge assumptions and provoke us to action. In many congregations, I could not have preached this.

On my upcoming mini-sabbatical, I am looking at the history of race and faith in the US. Which means I’m going to be immersed in stories of trauma — especially stories of Black trauma. It’s important to remember that alongside the trauma are stories and times of beautiful Black joy.
