On my route home from the bus around 8 pm, a car hit a bicyclist in the intersection. What a horrific sound. After lying in the road for a minute or so, the rider walked to the sidewalk. An ambulance came immediately, the driver pulled over, passersby helped out. They're all in my prayers tonight.

They’re going to keep making it impossible to ignore how half measures to address state violence simply aren’t up to the task.

@kmaustinyoung.bsky.social I referred someone to you today. They live in SF, grew up Roman Catholic, and might want to talk with an Episcopal priest who's a woman. Just so you know....

The youth group planned a gardening afternoon for right after our front lawn Eucharist with pet blessing, so there were extra families there. And then some passersby brought their dogs to be blessed. It was chaotic and beautiful.

Some parishioners and I got to hear Robby talk about his new book tonight and we walked away challenged in a powerful way. I see a book study in our future.... And personally, i realize there are some hard conversations I need to have quite soon. ⚓️

Getting to gather people in prayer around a community need is such an honor and a gift.⚓️

I know! But when someone else does it, I can just feel sympathy. I end up feeling shame and regret-- which sounds like some good inner work for me to deal with, huh?😉

Eh, I really would hope you can hold onto seeing each other as companions and co-discerners. It's just that when anxieties get heightened, things can get messy. But for as long as it isn't, just enjoy it!

I can imagine it might feel like you're in competition with one another. Hopefully, you'll find the process supportive and strengthening, though.

I think about reading her "meet a ____ Christian" series quite a lot these days. Those were so eye-opening for evangelical me

Oh, my. I have quit going to my neighborhood diner because all the waitstaff touches my shoulder or upper back every time they come by. It comes with calling sweetie or hon or dear (which doesn't help). And I've only been there 4-5 times in the last 18 months. We aren't friends.

I don't care what's *unpopular.* I'm a PIC abolitionist. Each of us gets to fight and struggle for the vision of society we want. That is NOT determined by elections.

Trans folks are saying: if you repeat harmful lies about us, you are not supporting us. If you accept a framework that positions us as delusional, dangerous, or less than fully human, you are not our allies. A compromise on human rights is a failure to defend human rights.

"...believing that Christ's promise held for others, but not for me...." Thank you for your honesty. It's heartbreaking that the church is stingy with unconditional love and celebration at the very times it could be most freeing.

I agree-- our spaces and liturgies should be structured to make full participation easily accessed by those with the greatest challenges to it. That said, would you please add alt text when you post images? Thank you!

"We do not need to attack one another or demand emotional agreement. We have to learn to hold our grief, and our truth, without bludgeoning each other with whatever's in our hands." (Kelly Hayes) Spend time with this one.

Our church has kneelers in all the pews and extra down in the undercroft, with more underway. some of the older ones are quite unique (in my experience): a Chicago Cubs logo, an image of a clown, the devil in high red heels,....

What would make you feel most comfortable with your new role on Sunday morning-- not just the bell-ringing (or not), but all the responsibilities? I feel anxiety when I have to learn a whole new choreography, so I tend to go simpler and add on when I feel more comfortable.

(And while I can imagine some saying we should avoid undertaking a discernment process while everything else is chaotic, that-- like many other things-- is only true some of the time)

Charlotte Johnson @revcharjohnson.bsky.social · 16/08/2026
Oof, this would have been quite triggering for me when I was going through the discernment process, as I was also going through a contentious divorce and launching teens into the world. Single adults without young children are often ignored in the church; we shouldn't be.

It's been different in other cities. But here, pastoral care has been mostly phone calls and texts with those groups. Or private conversations during coffee hour. Lunch breaks and after-work walks are the best for in-person.
