This magazine only has two ads on the front and back covers, printed on really nice paper, chock full of content (114 ad free pages!) It has a nice balance of old stuff and new games for old systems, and visual design that reminds me of game mags of 20+ years ago (a good thing). I'm jealous!

Pretty surreal to be in a print magazine. 12 year old me would be proud. (Issue 66 of Return Magazine, a German retro game magazine)
A photo of Return Magazine, open to the page on the ereader. On the left side is a story about the Series One games and a photo of me holding the cards up.

I'll have a booth at the Detroit Retro Gaming Show on November 7th. I'll have Series One cards for sale, free ereader cards, Pixel Pup to play (including two player) and a very early look at Eridin, my upcoming strategy game for both GBA/e-reader and PC. www.detroitretrogamingshow.com

I am reviving my alt account. It's now a general dev log. If you want small, frequent updates as I work on my game (coding, graphics, music, all of it), check it out. This main account will be more focused on major milestones, announcements, and ereader/gba tidbits.

I was glad to hear you say you can't get into the series. I love shooters and I dunno what it is about Raiden but I feel the same way. Maybe I'm not a freak?

I wrote up a quick blog post talking about why I'm making a game for both the GBA and PC of all things. It also goes a little into the how side. www.mattgreer.dev/blog/making-...

Retro Achievements so far has Pixel Pup at about 15 hours to complete, which is about right imo. retroachievements.org/game/42809 #gba #homebrew
A screenshot of the Retro Achievements stats table showing "beat the game" took 5 players a median time of 15 hours and 40 minutes, and "mastered" also took 5 players 15 hours and 40 minutes.

And if you look closely, just about every color is different across the two. The PC is how I drew the graphics in my pixel editor and the GBA color shift is due to it using 15 bit color (versus the PC's 24 bit).

It was frustrating and irritating just watching you play.

Scrolling a background on the GBA is quite chunky due to the low resolution and only 60 fps framerate. The PC has many times more resolution and an uncapped framerate. It's harder to see, but the character sliding is chunky on the GBA too.

The PC version of Eridin will largely be just like the GBA version. But it will get some quality of life improvements and graphical flourishes here and there. Here's a simple example. #gamedev #indiedev #whatbigpixelsyouhave

It sort of did as Pixel Pup for the GBA. I'm now working on a new game that I hope I will be able to release on the e-reader 🤞

My first goal for my GBA/e-reader/PC strategy game is to bring this screen to life. #indiedev #screenshotsaturday
A screenshot of the battle intro screen. It shows a rabbit-like creature with a cape, sword, and a worn out look on his face. He is facing a goblin who holds a sword, is wearing leather armor, and has a goofy look on his face.

The text reads "Rimcain: Invasion of Ru'oal Village"

The background is a fantasy style map in beige/grey.

The gba version will use fixed point and the pc version will have floating point. Thankfully it's not an action game so floating point won't come up too much, mostly just animations. If it was an action game I think this would be more annoying.

I'm making my next game be both a GBA/e-reader game and a PC game, from the same code base. This will be a good deal of extra work, but it will be worth it.

retrodotcards.com @retrodotcards.com · 10/09/2026
I've started exploring this and plan to keep picking at it on the side. I still think it *might* be possible, but I don't think it will be easy. The main problem is the e-reader itself takes over hardware resources that the wireless game needs. I think there might be workarounds though 🤞

It figures right as the store is winding down I discover a cheaper international shipping option. I really wish I had known about it a year ago...

I think an e-reader game that communicates over the wireless adapter might be possible. It would be just about the most asinine video game ever made, which intrigues me :)
Two Game Boy Advances both with an e-reader plugged in, then a wireless adapter plugged into each e-reader.

So far I think it looks pretty good. And they addressed the biggest issue with the game by giving it a modern camera. The locked camera really makes the original hard to go back to.

An ereader game that also uses barcodes would be pretty funny :)

retrodotcards.com @retrodotcards.com · 08/09/2026
But the only way to know for sure would be to have these devices to test with and know their protocols. So the best I can say is maybe.
121
retrodotcards.com @retrodotcards.com · 08/09/2026
They actually might work. An ereader game can access the serial port registers (ie, communicate through the link cable port) so it might be possible to communicate with other link port devices.

Not necessarily. I might figure something out. To be totally honest, I think it's unlikely, but you never know 🤞 I'm shutting the store down because Series One is pretty much sold out and I don't want to pay a lot of fees with nothing to sell.

Hmmm ... nearly 5000 files changed. Oops, I had regenerated all of the random puzzles. Even when you're the sole developer on a project, code review is still good practice. #indiedev

Sometimes puzzle race mode will really challenge your puzzle solving skills. Such as this doozy.

Even just testing puzzle race mode by myself is fun. I'm excited for my wife and I to compete. If it leads to me sleeping on the couch, I have succeeded! 😛

I haven't entirely written off the e-reader. I'd love to do more with it if feasible. But to be totally honest, it probably won't become feasible.

The image is low res as they would prefer I not share the contents of the article. It's in German and covers the history of the e-reader. My physical copy of the mag is still on its way, gotta cross the pond and all that.
