Mitsukoshi Department store poster in 1925 designed by Japanese artist Sugiura Hisui
This iconic promotional poster from 1925 (Taishō 14) is a masterpiece of commercial graphic design by Sugiura Hisui (1891–1965), advertising the expansion and architectural triumph of the historic Mitsukoshi Department Store in Tokyo.
The composition is structurally anchored by the towering, white, Western-style facade of the newly rebuilt Mitsukoshi flagship store in Nihonbashi, which rises grandly into an amber-orange sky. The building's landmark Renaissance-style tower, complete with arched windows and crowned by the Japanese national flag flying at its peak, stands as a proud architectural symbol of Tokyo's swift, modern rebirth following the devastating 1923 Great Kantō Earthquake. At the absolute base of the structure, a dense, silhouetted crowd of pedestrians and vintage motorcars creates a bustling street-level horizon, emphasizing the department store as the ultimate hub of fashionable public life.

In the foreground, the human subjects perfectly embody the fascinating cultural hybridity of 1925 urban Japan. Dominating the left side of the frame is a stylish, porcelain-skinned woman who bridges traditional and contemporary worlds. She wears a formal, deep navy-blue or black kimono adorned with a dynamic, fluid botanical pattern of scrolling vines and stylized blossoms creeping up the skirt—a design heavily influenced by the Western Art Nouveau movement. Her luxurious, patterned gold obi sash is tightly bound at her torso. Highlighting her elite, modern lifestyle, she sports a fashionable Western-style wave hairstyle, wears crisp white gloves, holds a chic European-style umbrella or parasol in one hand, and dangles a delicate black reticule pouch from the other. Walking beside her is a young girl styled entirely in Western apparel, a hallmark of affluent Taishō-era families.
