the jazz police at the time weren't pleased 🤷
“Chasin' the Trane,” a blues that consumes all of the second side, is more like waitin' for a train--a 100-car freight train--to pass. If you take away his backing and leave Coltrane's solo standing naked, the latter would become more insignificant than it seems. Shakespeare's “sound and fury” is musically illustrated here. Coltrane may be searching for new avenues of expression, but if it is going to take this form of yawps, squawks, and countless repetitive runs, then it should be confined to the woodshed. Whether or not it is “far out” is not the question. Whatever it is, it is monotonous, a treadmill to the Kingdom of Boredom. There are places when his horn actually sounds as if it is in need of repair. In fact, the solo could be described as one big air-leak."

“[O]n the physical universe level, we can view Dr. King as a great orator whose message functioned as a force to bring about social change for all of humanity, and the work of John Coltrane would employ the same message vibrationally: having to do with creativity as a vehicle to bring about expanded consciousness (and this consciousness would, of course, bring a better understanding of Dr. King’s mission). In other words, there is a natural complementary factor between alternative functionalisms, as this consideration relates to the dictates of its 'given vibrational route assignment'—and the realness of this phenomenon is not one-dimensional, because the reality position of alternative functionalism is not dependent on the order of a given sequence."

This week, representatives of the 9/11 families are again demanding an end to what they have called the Justice Department’s silence about what happened to the Bayoumi evidence and why he and other Saudis were not more aggressively pursued. The families have also questioned whether the Trump administration — which has strengthened U.S. diplomatic and business ties to the Saudi royal family — is committed to pursuing the truth about the possible role of Saudi officials.

The City Council also agreed to borrow an additional $267.3 million to cover the soaring cost of lawsuits alleging Chicago police officers committed a wide range of misconduct — including wrongful convictions and improper pursuits.

Johnson’s budget forecast anticipates setting aside $401 million in the 2027 budget to resolve lawsuits, $226 million more than in 2026, Ernst said. The bulk of the city’s legal bills to go resolving lawsuits that allege Chicago police officers committed misconduct. The city’s 2026 budget set aside just $82.5 million to resolve police misconduct lawsuits, records show.

SOUTH CHICAGO — Mayor Brandon Johnson and some Southeast Side neighbors remain at odds over a proposed quantum computing campus, with the mayor facing jeers from the crowd at a town hall on the project Saturday.

Community advocacy organization Southside Together held the “Community over Quantum” town hall in South Chicago Saturday, which Johnson attended to discuss the $9 billion Quantum Shore megadevelopment set for the former U.S. Steel South Works site.

The overwhelming message from the crowd at Arnold Mireles Academy, 9000 S. Exchange Ave., was clear, with some attendees chanting: “Reverse the permits. Shut it down. Mayor Johnson, do it now.”

Bennie Maupin on the bass clarinet www.npr.org/2006/12/11/6...
Mr. MAUPIN: I think because it is made from wood that has a lot do to with it. The resonance is what really sort of captures you. In a lot of the music we hear on the radio we hear high frequencies a lot. They use the soprano saxophone or the alto saxophone. And of course you hear guitar. But it's the low frequencies that have this tremendous power to really pull you in. They automatically force you to listen.

The beauty of it is there are these centers in your body that the yogas call the chakras. The chakras are places where there are centers of energy. And once I started playing the bass clarinet, I realized right away that something was going on inside my body because of the vibration of the horn itself. And I think that when people hear it, they also connect to it.

For three years, Chicago police officers accused of serious misconduct have had to sit and wait for the Illinois Supreme Court to decide the future of officer discipline.
Bad cops are not being fired, and good cops who may be wrongfully accused are stuck in professional purgatory.
And as the city and the Fraternal Order of Police await resolution in the yearslong legal fight, records reviewed by the Tribune show local prosecutors have disqualified dozens of current Chicago Police Department officers from testifying in criminal cases, even as their disciplinary matters remain pending.
In response to a Freedom of Information Act request, the state’s attorney’s office disclosed that 254 law enforcement officers in Cook County will not be called as witnesses for the prosecution following changes to office policy enacted last year. Of those, 240 work or have worked for CPD.
The Police Department has moved to fire 27 of the officers, records show. Most of those cases remain on hold pending a ruling from the Illinois Supreme Court, expected later this year, and those 27 officers were placed on no-pay status after the administrative charges were filed.
The list of officers barred from testifying ballooned from just 66 in March 2023 to 290 in October 2024, shortly before then-Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx left office. Meanwhile, city employment records show at least 87 officers — ranging from blue-shirt beat cops to detectives to supervisors — have either retired or resigned from the department “under inquiry” since 2024.

"Ronald Reagan civility conference" 🤔 atlpresscollective.com/2024/09/12/o... #DismantleWhiteness bsky.app/profile/josh...
Many modern anti-Black dog whistles are based on rhetoric used and popularized by Ronald Reagan in the late 70s and early 80s. The idea of a welfare queen, an urban woman who abused public benefits assistance by using fake names or addresses, was popularized by Reagan throughout his campaign. While he never assigned a race to this allegedly real woman, the implication of her being Black was readily understood by supporters and detractors of Reagan alike. In his crusade against public benefits, Reagan would also frequently talk about “young bucks” who were allegedly using food stamps to buy steaks and other fancy foods. This term also lacked a racial descriptor, but the fact that Reagan only used the term while campaigning in Southern states betrayed his anti-Black intentions.

Whiteness does not see itself.
Senator Dick Durbun posting on Facebook:

I was with Lindsey last week at the NATO Summit in Türkiye. At a private dinner at the Ambassador’s residence, he was working every Senator on a strategy to end the war in Ukraine. Typical Lindsey.

Lindsey was part of every important policy issue and an indispensable player in every Senate ‘gang’. He was a fierce Republican partisan one day and a key bipartisan ally the next.

When I was Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, he was the Ranking Republican. His word was good—no cheap shots.

He knew the Dream Act was my most important bill. He was the only Republican who would cosponsor it for years. I will never forget it.

Loretta and I send our condolences to Lindsey’s family and legion of friends in South Carolina and around the world.

“What is the reality of women in creative music (?)—or at least, what observations can be made with regard to the participation of women in creative music? Based on my experiences, the present planet situation is designed to make it practically impossible for a woman to pursue creativity for a life’s commitment—or at least in the same context as men. It is almost impossible for a woman to secure a strong enough position in society to make a living from her work—this is true even though, in spite of the odds, there are many women who have succeeded in making their activity known and “ised.” Still, the situation women are faced with in this and previous time zones cannot be looked at as fair in comparison to the composite culture—by any means. To understand the collective factors that have produced this reality posture is to gain insight into what is really happening with the male creative community, as well as the sophistication of the controlling forces surrounding the music. This is so because the defining and controlling community that determines and regulates perception dynamics (and interpretations and/or focuses) has always dealt with women unfairly. To[…]”
